Vegas Bartender Wins Top U.S. Honors

It’s a competition that starts with a “Purification,” includes a “Sacrifice,” “Beheading” and “Judgment; and for Las Vegas bartender Greg Black, it ended with a “Championship.” A bartender since 1997, Black, best mastered the nine-step Belgian beer pouring ritual Tuesday night to win the Stella Artois Draught Master Competition held at Lavo Nightclub.

Black will now represent the U.S. against more than 30 other countries at the World Draught Master Competition in Leuven, Belgium this October.

“Cracking open a can or popping the cap off a bottle is easy, but preparing a beer following the strict standards of the Belgian Pouring Ritual takes a lot more care and attention to detail,” said Black. “At the Draught Master Competition you know every step of the pouring ritual will be highly scrutinized. To be named champion and able to represent the U.S. in Belgium is incredible.”

The Draught Master Competition recognizes the best bartenders for their ability to adhere to the Belgian Pouring Ritual – a nine-step process that includes “purifying” the glassware; “sacrificing” the first beer poured and “beheading” the beer for the perfect head of foam. The timed competition took place in front of a panel of four judges as well as a large audience of consumers and industry experts.

Judges graded the competitors on their ability to pour a perfect glass of Stella Artois and Hoegaarden from draught. Competitors also were judged on how well they opened, poured and served bottles of Stella Artois, Hoegaarden and Leffe Blonde. Judges were looking for the perfect pour as well as a showcase of skills, style and personality.

“The Belgians have mastered the art of the perfect pour, which not only ensures the utmost enjoyment of the beer, but also showcases the pouring process itself,” said competition judge Cian Hickey, vice president of draught, Anheuser-Busch InBev. “The pouring skills on display in Las Vegas Tuesday were near perfection and would make any Belgian beer drinker proud. The strong competition also will prepare the U.S. champion to take on the best from around the globe at the World Draught Master finals.”

In 2008, U.S. champion Anthony Alba finished fourth in the World Draught Master finals. It was the highest finish for an American since 2005 when Jessica Waltz took first.

Wynkoop Beerdrinker finalists chosen

Wynkoop Brewing in Denver has announced the finalists for 2009 Beerdrinker of the Year. Included are two former finalists and an Wynkoop regular. They are, from the press release:

J Mark Angelus, a Nehalem, Oregon semi-retired prosecutor, avid beer drinker and 2008 Beerdrinker of the Year finalist. In 2008 Angelus sampled 1,029 beers, visited 93 breweries (in four States and three nations) and sampled 244 Oregon beers at eleven beer festivals in his home state.

His philosophy about beer: “While I never take myself seriously, I take my beer seriously. I have found no greater beer experience than to drink great beer at the place where it is rooted with the people who are an integral part of that beer’s culture.”

Cody Christman, a Denver software engineer, beer educator and avid homebrewer and beer lover. In 2008 Christman began teaching a Beer 101 course to friends and family in his home bar. The basement bar features a 15-foot bar, seven taps and three refrigerators. He has tasted beer in 19 countries and visited over 200 breweries.

His philosophy about beer: “Everything I do, and every decision I make revolves around beer. I am a tireless advocate of beer culture and the brewing industry. Beer is my passion. It is the most diverse and complex drink known to man.”

Phil Farrell, a Cummings, Georgia commercial pilot, homebrewer, beer judge and 2007 finalist. He has tasted beer in every country in Europe, 1000 of the world’s pubs and 400 brewpubs. His basement beer pub features six taps, two refrigerators, and a 15-gallon brewing system.

His philosophy about beer: “Beer is first and foremost a social drink. It is the most flexible and universally affordable fine beverage there is. Every social gathering and every food item is enhanced with beer. Beer is the greatest gift ever given to the human race and meant to be shared with others.”

The finalists will be grilled on Feb. 21 by a panel of previous Beerdrinker of the Year winners and national beer experts. The winners receives free beer for life at the Wynkoop Brewing, $250 worth of beer at their local brewpub or beer bar, and clothing proclaiming them the 2009 Beerdrinker of the Year.

Katarina Van Derham Named 2009 St. Pauli Girl

After an historic election, St. Pauli Girl beer, the No. 2 German beer in the U.S., has officially named model Katarina Van Derham as the new St. Pauli Girl spokesmodel for the 2009 calendar year. Van Derham will bring the German barmaid brand icon to life, and will appear on the 2009 St. Pauli Girl poster, travel across the country on the St. Pauli Girl media tour and be featured on the St. Pauli Girl website and promotional materials.

Breaking new ground this year, Van Derham is the first St. Pauli Girl chosen through an online vote, beating out three other finalists on Maxim. Van Derham, a native of Slovakia who speaks five languages, won over online voters and the St. Pauli Girl brand team with her resemblance to the traditional St. Pauli Girl icon and vivacious personality. Selecting a spokesmodel to represent the beer is a decades-long tradition for St. Pauli Girl, and Van Derham marks the 26th spokesmodel selected in the brand’s history.

“Being named the 2009 St. Pauli Girl means the world to me,” said Van Derham. “I am very honored and look forward to meeting St. Pauli Girl fans all over the country.”

Van Derham grew up in a small village in the woods of Slovakia, a communist country at the time. She moved to the United States at the age of 22, without any intention of becoming a model. While working as a waitress in Los Angeles, she was often told to pursue modeling, and at age 26 finally decided to give it a shot. Van Derham was immediately booked for several modeling jobs, and in a short time her career has skyrocketed.

Van Derham can be seen in advertising campaigns for AT&T, Dodge, Rockstar Energy Drinks, Ed Hardy and Christian Audigier. On television she has had roles on shows including “Monk” and “CSI,” and has also appeared in the films “Cellular” and “15 Minutes.” Van Derham has graced the cover of dozens of magazines both in the U.S. and internationally including Iron Man, Max Muscle, Muscle & Fitness, Best Body, Double XL, British Maxim and more.

Van Derham became a U.S. citizen last year, and was very appreciative to vote in her first ever election in November 2008. In addition to her modeling work, Van Derham also works in web design for an architectural graphic design firm.

Germany’s Frozen Lake of Beer

An accident just before the new year created one of the weirdest beer phenomenons of all time: a frozen lake of beer! At a busy intersection in Kassel, a city in the center of Germany (in the state of Hesse), a delivery truck careened out of control while trying to make a sharp left turn at the bottom of a hill and, when it toppled over, sent 1,600 beer bottles smashing to the road. 80 crates, or about 800 liters weighing 12 tons quickly froze in temperatures of about 25 degrees Fahrenheit creating small lake of beer, strong enough, apparently, to ice skate on. Sadly, as far as I know no one tried and there are no photographs available. And that’s a shame, because I imagine it would be quite a spectacle. If anyone has a photo of Kassel’s beer lake, by all means send it in so we can share it with the world.

Three Sheets’ New Year’s Eve Pub Crawl

The show celebrates New Year’s Eve by traveling to the geographical heart of time’s measure (Greenwich Mean Time). Zane’s mission is to visit London’s watering holes with international themes plus make a few stops at traditional British establishments. He begins at James Bond creator Ian Fleming’s favorite drinking location (Dukes Hotel) and goes on to England’s “oldest coaching inn,” The George Inn (no one’s sure of when it opened, but it was rebuilt after a fire in 1676). Almost lethal drinks imbibed by Zane and friends include “A Bunny with a Gun,” “Extra Añejo,” a “Chilly Willy,” “Ice the Cake,” a “Leg-Over-Land,” a “Monkey Shoulder” and “Bitter and Twisted Beer.” Ultimately, will Zane survive after meeting “Barry the Poisoner” or a visit from his most celebrated Three Sheets drinking partner Steve McKenna?

Holiday Ale Festival Serves 17,000

Sunny skies and mild temperatures set the mood for the 13th annual Holiday Ale Festival in Portland, Oregon, which witnessed attendance consistent with the year prior: final numbers reached 17,000. The West Coast’s most prestigious winter beer festival took place Dec. 3 through Dec. 7 at Pioneer Courthouse Square.

Organizers added a fifth day to the event this year, which was well-received by the public. According to event manager Preston Weesner, the goal was to have 500 attend on opening day: more than 1,000 turned up, many to sample an additional eight special beers that weren’t available the rest of the weekend. A new annex with a third bar was also deemed a success, as it helped to alleviate the crowds in the main tent.

The Belgian Beer and Brunch, an auxiliary event held on the Sunday of the festival, sold out, with more than 80 people sampling prestigious beers and noshing on pastries, meats and cheeses.

The Holiday Ale Festival presented more than 50 robust winter craft beers on draught, all of which were either created for the event, or were rare or vintage beers not readily available in the state. These winter warmers were all designed to ward off the chill of winter and warm both the palate and soul. Complex in aroma and flavor, these beers were rich in color, big in body, and high in alcohol.

The People’s Choice winner, which was determined by the beer that went through the most kegs, was Collaborator’s Hallucinator Olde Ale, followed by the Holiday Ale Festival/Hair of the Dog Commemorative Blend Jim II.

Festival attendees stayed warm and dry under a large clear-topped tent that covered the venue while allowing for views of the city lights. Gas heaters created a cozy ambiance under the boughs of the city’s Christmas tree.

In addition to beer tasting, the Holiday Ale Festival also featured on-site food from Rogue Ales, event merchandise, complimentary Crater Lake Sodas for designated drivers, organic cheese pairings, mead sampling, and seasonal background music.

Nebraska Brewing 1st To Comply with Digital Conversion Mandate

I got the following press release from Nebraska brewing in Papillion, Nebraska last week, suggesting things have been a little quiet around the brewery lately. But at least they’re keeping their wits about them.

Nebraska Brewing Company is pleased to announce the completion of Phase 1 of its Analog to Digital Craft Beer Flavor Conversion in compliance with Federal Mandates. The Congressional mandate for the cessation of full power Analog flavor is to take effect on February 17, 2009 and requires that all analog flavors be converted to digital by that time.

“We believe our efforts to be ground breaking in the sense that while all Craft Beers are required to make the jump, we believe that we are the first to undertake the initiative.” Said Paul Kavulak, Owner of Nebraska Brewing Company. “Over the past year, our R&D department has been able to convert our Brunette Nut Brown and Cardinal Pale Ales to the new format with only minor incompatibilities with the old Analog Growlers, we’re in great shape to be fully converted by the mandated date.”

Digital flavor enables Hi-Def aspects which drinkers cannot experience using the older Analog 16 oz. Pint Glasses. While the newer digital 16 oz. glasses have been on the market for years, drinkers will not be able to experience a true HD experience without the new beverages.

Nebraska Brewing Company Public Service Ads have been running for months but unfortunately, the marketing department missed a significant error introduced by the Ad Agencies just prior to roll-out. “TV Ads in thousands of markets have mistakenly used the word TV instead of Beer in our commercials” Said Paul. “We’re doing our best to rectify this situation but our ad dollars are already spent. Just think Digital Beer when you hear Digital TV and you’ll be fine. Also, we expect some consumer backlash when they realize they should have been spending their monies on our Craft Beer instead of buying new TVs.” Nebraska Brewing Company Digital Beers use a special digital tap and binary beer lines which maintain the beverage integrity from tank to glass. “The biggest hurdle we’ve encountered to-date was the difficulty in the acquisition of digital yeast but our suppliers have worked very hard alongside us in our efforts”. Said Paul.

News within the industry has been reporting for some time that many of the larger factory breweries appear to have already tried and failed in their digital flavor conversion efforts as evidenced by the absence of flavor in many major brands. Further evidence of this appears in new ads touting drinkability, color changing mountains, or wide mouth cans instead of directing attention to the problems with flavor. Nebraska Brewing Company remains committed to quality, flavor, and an ongoing effort in remaining the people’s choice in these difficult economic times. In the days leading up to the full digital conversion, Nebraska Brewing Company consumers are urged to try these converted beers soon and often to evaluate personal compatibility with the new format.

Bounty on December 5th Birthdays

Wanted: 21-year-old, 75-year-old to Lead Repeal of Prohibition March

21st Amendment Brewery is offering a $75 bounty for a San Franisco Bay Area resident turning 75 on December 5, which is the 75th Anniversary of the repeal of prohibition. In addition, they are offering a $25 bounty for someone turning 21 on the same day. The birthday boy(s)/girl(s) will lead a We Want Beer! March on Friday afternoon, Dec. 5, at 4:00 p.m.

“The Repeal of Prohibition is near and dear to our hearts,” said Shaun O’Sullivan, Chief Hop Head for The 21A. “We don’t usually need an excuse for a party, but this is such a good one that we’re having a parade, too.”

Local residents with a 21st or 75th birthday on December 5, or who know someone with a 21st or 75th birthday on December 5, are asked to contact 21A at prohibitionbirthday@gmail.com. 21st Amendment is offering a bounty for the first person who introduces them to each Grand Marshal. Beer Parade

The We Want Beer! March will begin at 4:00 p.m. at Justin Herman Plaza (1 Market St, at Embarcadero) and end at 21st Amendment Brewery, located at 563 2nd Street, San Francisco. The pub will be transformed into a prohibition-ending celebration, complete with a speakeasy in the mezzanine that will require a password to enter.

“We’ll share the password with the Grand Marshals, but everyone else will have to find the password themselves,” said O’Sullivan. Password retrieval instructions will be distributed Dec. 1 via Twitter and the 21st Amendment blog.

Potential Grand Marshals must be able to provide proof of their December 5, 1987 or December 5, 1933 birthday, and they’ll need to provide their own transportation to the march. “But we’ll help them get home safely after the party,” he said.

The UFO Vote

Senator Barack Obama holds a commanding lead over Senator John McCain – 10,238 votes (55 percent) to 8,411 votes (45 percent), as of October 21 — in The Flying Saucer Draught Emporium’s 2008 Presidential Election Poll.

The Texas-based restaurant chain kicked off its poll in early September, and polling lasts until election night, Tuesday, Nov. 4. Customers can “vote” for their favorite candidate by purchasing special pint glasses for $5. Votes are tallied and updated at the end of each day, and customers can vote as many times as they like.

“People often discuss politics over a beer, so what better way to get in the spirit of the election than to combine the two – and get to vote for your candidate as many times as you like!” said Shannon Wynne, owner of The Flying Saucer. “Senator Obama leads overall and in the majority of our markets, but Senator McCain does lead in a few. The Flying Saucer is present in several battleground states, so it’s pretty interesting when you look at the breakdown of votes.”

The Flying Saucer is hosting the 2008 poll at all of its 13 locations in six states, which include Dallas, Austin, Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio, Texas; Kansas City, Mo.; Little Rock, Ark.; Cordova, Memphis and Nashville, Tenn.; Charlotte and Raleigh, N.C.; and Columbia, S.C. Polling data for each location is listed, and appears to updated daily, along with a running total.

Voting in the ALEction

Half Moon Bay Brewing, on the coast of California near Pacifica, has come up with a unique way to decide the election. Their beer line, named Maverick’s, has taken their popular Harbor Light Ale, which their website describes as “a light colored beer brewed with European malt and hops, lager-like flavors and a light, clean aftertaste,” and created two tap handles and labels for the beer.

Though the beer is the same, they’ve labeled one beer for Barack Obama and another for John McCain. At the bar, the tap handle on the left features Obama and the tap handle on the right has McCain. Half Moon Bay’s alection is then tracking sales of both the draft varieties and also 22 oz. bottles, which likewise feature two different labels for each of the candidates. Bottles can be found at the brewpub and also at select bay area retailers (and can be purchased online, but only in California).

So far, Obama has outsold McCain 5,048 to 1,336 and an ongoing tally is available online. As the Half Moon Bay alection puts it, vote early and often.
