SF 2021 Strong Beer Week Paused for Pandemic

From: Shaun O’Sullivan
Hey Strong Beer good people. I hope you’re doing well and connecting safely with each other. This year we are pausing on Strong Beer Month with Magnolia Brewing for obvious reasons.
Strong Beer Month, every February, is largely a month-long retail event that relies strongly on people coming into our locations and enjoying the beers and themselves with our menu pairings, special events and frivolity. We are thinking about doing it later this year, but unsure about that at this point.
We’ll see you again and if you have a Strong Beer Month glass from previous years, head over to the 21st Amendment Brewery and Magnolia and pick-up some beer and pour it into that glass and think of us, as we’re thinking of you. Take care and be well.

The Pliny is coming! But only online orders this year…

PLINY THE YOUNGER RELEASE
Pliny the Younger 2021 Release Cancelled at Both Breweries Due to COVID-19, Bottles Available ONLINE Only
Like most major beer releases and other special events during this COVID-era, we are hitting the pause button and scaling back our annual 2021 Pliny the Younger release! Planning for the 2021 Younger release has been a huge topic of discussion for Vinnie, Natalie and key employees throughout 2020. It is very difficult to plan for much of anything these days, let alone a major beer release which draws thousands of visitors from all over the world to our 2 breweries in Sonoma County. We have had to make some hard decisions based on many factors, first and foremost being the health and safety of not only our employees and customers, but also the community in which we live. Our business operations are also dependent upon both state and local health orders which can change, and likely will continue to change, at anytime. Therefore, there will be no in person release at either brewery this year. While we are sad to miss seeing our loyal friends and fans from around the world, it has become clear that it will not be safe for us to gather again by February. Neither of our pubs have been allowed to reopen for indoor dining since we closed in March 2020 due to the unrelenting spread of the highly contagious coronavirus. In December, we had to shut down outdoor dining again due to a major virus surge which continues to ravage all of California. Although our Downtown Santa Rosa pub is still operating with takeout only, our Windsor pub will remain completely closed until further notice.

We just brewed this year’s 4 batches of Pliny the Younger, which is about 1/3 of what we produced last year. Our signature 510ml bottles will be available for sale as part of a mixed case for a limited time through our website for direct shipping to consumers within the state of California. Vinnie and Natalie plan to host a couple of virtual tastings during what would be our normal release time in February via Facebook LIVE! We are also taking this year off from wholesale draft distribution as the majority of our accounts who would carry Younger are either closed or only able to offer takeout. More importantly, we are very concerned for the health and safety of our wholesale accounts and their employees. Large crowds tend to gather wherever Younger is available, which can lead to unintended and dire consequences during a global pandemic. The last thing we want is to be responsible for creating super spreader event. We want everyone to be around enjoying Pliny the Younger in 2022! So please grab a beer and keep reading to learn all the details of our modified 2021 Younger release!

TheGoodHop Saved!

thegoodhop
The Good Hop saved thanks to the strength of its community and social media.
“It’s been a tsunami of emotion wrapped up in a sharknado of goodwill. Last week you saw a TGH post saying we were in real danger of closing our doors. We had one ask: share TGH’s posts on your own social media feeds and talk us up to your friends, family, and coworkers. We hit “send” then waited. Would people actually share or would they just keep scrolling?” the owner, Melissa, shared on instagram.
Suddenly, the TGH crew was seeing their posts reshared everywhere! Suddenly, a whole lot more people knew about The Good Hop and wanted to help save it. Did it work?
Visits to their website jumped 400%, which helped get the word out about The Good Hop holiday beer boxes. “We sold more boxes yesterday–the first day they went on sale–than we’ve sold in the last 3 years COMBINED.You did this. YOU. Never could we have imagined the response we would get from you guys when you knew our little corner bar was in danger.” Melissa shared.
Keep the momentum building!

Sonoma Tart Brewer Q & A

Bear Republic Brewing Co. Quality Manager Roger Herpst Talks Sonoma Tart
BC: Who came up with this beer’s recipe?
I did.

BC: What’s your favorite aspect of this beer (flavor, aroma, etc.)?
This beer has an amazing tropical nose reminiscent of Sauvignon Blanc or Muscat wines, but the balance of the core components—fruity tropical aroma, soft wheat implication of sweetness, tart lacto zing—are what make this beer shine.

BC: Where does this beer’s name come from?
We wanted to pay homage to our home county—lots of amazing beer comes from Sonoma County and this is no exception. The label artwork features local landmarks unique to our home. The beer also pays homage to the artisan ways our county has lived over the last 100 plus years. The diverse flavor profiles are similar to the wide variety of produce, wine, spirits, dairy and fruit produced here. Sonoma county is known for its artisanal food and drink. We believe this beer fits right in. There is a flavor for everybody.

BC: Can you describe this beer in 10 words or less?
Tropical, juicy, tart, and crushable. Now in non-IPA package.

A Big Craft Beer Welcome to the First Latina-Founded Community Brewing Space, Mujeres Brew House

San Diego Welcomes First Latina-Founded Community Brewing Space, Mujeres Brew House

When you think iconic beer zones, San Diego city and county rate high with most craft beer enthusiasts. I eagerly look forward to seeking out Mujeres Brew House in the city by the bay on my next trip down.
“On July 1, 2020, the Mujeres Brew Club in San Diego will open the first Latinx women-founded and women-led community brewing space, educational facility, and taproom dedicated to empowering people of all backgrounds, specifically focusing on women of color in the craft beer industry. According to co-founders Carmen Favela and Esthela Davila, Mujeres Brew House will be managed by women and for women with the intent of breaking down barriers of entry into the beer scene.”
Mujeres Brew House is an incorporated non-profit collaboration between Border X Brewing, Mujeres Brew Club, and progressive community gallery space Bread & Salt.
If the beer matches the concept I see nothing but blue skies for this great idea.

Pandemic-era women help keep CA craft beer industry afloat

Meet the pandemic-era women helping to keep California’s craft beer industry afloat
When coronavirus landed in California and Bay Area closed its non-essential businesses, the loss in revenue sent the state’s breweries – along with its bars and wineries – into a tailspin.
“We literally now haven’t kegged anything in two months just because there was no point,” says Claudia Pamparana, co-founder of Alameda’s Faction Brewing.
“It’s been frustrating,” she says. “It’s depressing to not have people sitting on our patio.”
The new objective for the foreseeable future for Faction – and for others across Northern California – was (and is) to can that perishable beer and sell it off as fast as possible, while it’s still fresh. So they called the Can Van.

Newsletter from our friends at Bear Republic Brewing

Dear Friends and Family,
At Bear Republic Brewing Co., we feel great responsibility for the role we play in the lives of our guests for over 25 years—even more important to us during this difficult time when we are all being more cautious about how we engage with our guests and the community.

Many of you have called to see if the Bear Republic is open, and at this time, we are doing everything to provide great service and make you feel at home and safe. Governor Newsom mandated all restaurants to cut seating in half, which we are doing as well as spacing guests out so they are not within 6 feet of another table. We have a vast and large space, and a beautiful beer garden, so we can all spread out. In order to further protect our guests and staff, all food and beverage orders will be taken at the bar to limit everyone’s interaction.

We understand that you might feel more comfortable eating at home, we have a to go menu available on our website www.bearrepublic.com. We also have cold beer to go that can be picked up with your order. We are adding curb side service. Please call 707.585.2722 and press 0 to order your to go items.

Although we have no reason to believe that anyone infected with Coronavirus has been in our pub, we have taken additional steps to reduce any risks our guests and staff may face. We have always followed stringent health department regulations and have increased our frequency and rigor in our cleaning steps. Our team knows they have paid sick leave, and that they are expected to stay home if they are feeling ill. This protects everyone.
We are proactively suspending our children’s toys in the beer garden and board games in the pub. We have also postponed Bingo, Paint Night and Trivia. As any other changes arise, we will be communicating them in a timely manner.

We will continue to monitor all updates from county, state and Federal authorities and will continue to monitor the effectiveness of our mitigation procedures on a daily basis. Please take care to follow each of the precautionary steps to protect yourself and your family. Be sure to take home some Bear Republic bottles and cans from the grocery store, but please remember we will remain open and always appreciate your support. Above all, stay strong during this challenging time for our community.

Sincerely,
Marcin Furmankiewicz & the Bear Team
Pub General Manager
