Then there’s our REALLY secret ingredient

The maker of saké brand Dassai, Asahi Shuzo Co., has asked the Japan Century Symphony Orchestra to compose a piece of music that will be played in the brewery during the fermentation and maturation processes. The song, to be written by composer Kaoru Wada following a visit to the brewery, will be called Dassai-Megaki, and is expected to be completed by this summer.

Brewdog Reports Theft of Trailer Load of Beer Worth £150K

Scottish Brewery BrewDog reported the theft of an entire trailer load of beer, worth £150,000, from a motorway service station in Cheshire.
In a tweet on March 24th, BrewDog co-founder James Watt explained that the crime occurred on the way to the brewer’s online distribution center.
The beer, believed to be cans of Punk IPA, was taken from the trailer while it was parked at the Moto Lymm services in Cheshire on Tuesday at around 7:45am.

Really? 7:45 in the morning (rush hour most places) and no one saw a team of crooks unloading 26 pallets of beer from a truck parked at a gas station?

Watt said that there would be a temporary shortage of the beer online due to the theft, but said every effort would be made to increase the stock.

BrewDog’s website is now showing the beer as in stock.

Newsletter from our friends at Bear Republic Brewing

Dear Friends and Family,
At Bear Republic Brewing Co., we feel great responsibility for the role we play in the lives of our guests for over 25 years—even more important to us during this difficult time when we are all being more cautious about how we engage with our guests and the community.

Many of you have called to see if the Bear Republic is open, and at this time, we are doing everything to provide great service and make you feel at home and safe. Governor Newsom mandated all restaurants to cut seating in half, which we are doing as well as spacing guests out so they are not within 6 feet of another table. We have a vast and large space, and a beautiful beer garden, so we can all spread out. In order to further protect our guests and staff, all food and beverage orders will be taken at the bar to limit everyone’s interaction.

We understand that you might feel more comfortable eating at home, we have a to go menu available on our website www.bearrepublic.com. We also have cold beer to go that can be picked up with your order. We are adding curb side service. Please call 707.585.2722 and press 0 to order your to go items.

Although we have no reason to believe that anyone infected with Coronavirus has been in our pub, we have taken additional steps to reduce any risks our guests and staff may face. We have always followed stringent health department regulations and have increased our frequency and rigor in our cleaning steps. Our team knows they have paid sick leave, and that they are expected to stay home if they are feeling ill. This protects everyone.
We are proactively suspending our children’s toys in the beer garden and board games in the pub. We have also postponed Bingo, Paint Night and Trivia. As any other changes arise, we will be communicating them in a timely manner.

We will continue to monitor all updates from county, state and Federal authorities and will continue to monitor the effectiveness of our mitigation procedures on a daily basis. Please take care to follow each of the precautionary steps to protect yourself and your family. Be sure to take home some Bear Republic bottles and cans from the grocery store, but please remember we will remain open and always appreciate your support. Above all, stay strong during this challenging time for our community.

Sincerely,
Marcin Furmankiewicz & the Bear Team
Pub General Manager

You too can be a smartypants – Why some beers don’t have ABV on the Label, isn’t it illegal?

Not it’s not illegal, actually the opposite. After Prohibition was repealed, Congress passed a law in 1935 that banned the listing of alcohol content on cans and bottles of brew. The thinking was that if the beers prominently listed their alcohol content, it would cause breweries to compete in “strength wars,” attempting to make the strongest beers. The ban on listing alcohol content on beer lasted until 1995 when the Coors Brewing Company successfully challenged the law.

British Baker Warburtons Turns Old Crumpets Into IPA

Jonathan Warburton’s bakery business posted a £13.5 million loss last year due to falling wrapped bread sales. So he turned his attention to beer instead and partnered with sustainable brewer, Toast Ale, to create an IPA made with leftover crumpets. It’s the first non-baked product in Warburtons’ over 140 year history. The light session IPA is made by substituting leftover crumpets for the malted barley. The beers are being released as limited editions for now.

2 beers and a little science makes a slammable chicken

Let’s get to the bottom of why, exactly, booze elevates your dinner. To deepen our understanding, Roger Barth, a professor at West Chester University in Pennsylvania and the author of The Chemistry of Beer, commented on the authors plans to make a chicken following a recipe from famed Harlem restaurant Red Rooster, and he was warmly encouraging. The recipe uses BEER in two separate stages:

The History of Presidents and Beer

The Secret History of Presidents and Beer
Americans love leaders who look like someone they’d get a beer with — no matter how ambiguous that description is.
When Anthony Bourdain sat down with President Barack Obama for dinner and a beer in 2016, the President shared he rarely slips out of the White House for a beer he had something better…White House homebrew.
