Ask Real Beer

April 2000

I am planning a wedding and trying to decide how many kegs of beer I need to order. I am told there are 85 12-ounce glasses per pony keg? Any idea how to calculate per person how many 12-ounce glasses to allow?

You know your guests better than we do. But don't forget you are going to have loss to foam, that you won't be able to empty the keg and that there will be spillage. Your best bet is to see if the store where you get the keg can have a second (or third or whatever) in reserve. You can then monitor consumption and make a quick phone call if needed. Another possibility is to have bottled beer as a backup or alternative. It is easier to save and drink later.
