The brewers of Samuel Adams beers announced a new contest for homebrewers, with the winners receiving a trip to the Great American Beer Festival and a chance to have their recipe brewed and distributed by Samuel Adams.

"Samuel Adams is excited to give homebrewers and beer lovers the opportunity to express their passion and creativity for beer by continuing the tradition of the Samuel Adams American Homebrew Contest," said founder Jim Koch. The company held similar contests in the 1990s, releasing several homebrew recipes in the LongShot line, including a coffee molasses stout and a beer flavored with hazelnut.

Here's how it works:

- Beers must be submitted between Aug. 1 and 18.

- A panel of experts will choose five recipes to advance to the finals held during the 25th GABF (Sept. 28-30), with the five finalists awarded a trip to the festival, where two winning recipes will be announced.

- Boston Beer will release six-packs of LongShot in February 2007 containing two bottles of each of the winning homebrewed beers, plus two bottles of the recipe from a company-wide contest.

Since 2001, Samuel Adams has held an annual contest to find the best employee homebrew. This year three employee finalists will also attend the GABF, and one of their recipes will be chosen by festival attendees to be included in the LongShot six pack.

Entry information is available at the Samuel Adams website.
