Belgian beer safe to drink

Study finds no dioxin, no threat from moderate consumption

June 17, 1999 - A scientific study found that Belgian beer is safe to drink despite the country's recent scare over dioxin in food.

Belgian's beer industry commissioned the study after export curbs theatened beer shipments to key markets, mostly in Asia.

"Never were dioxins found in Belgian beer by the Food Inspection of the Ministry of Health," Professor Jacques Janssens of the European Cancer Prevention Organization said in a paper on beer and health. "Moderate daily consumption of beer has no health consequences for the general public. Beer does not contain dioxins."

Belgian brewers count heavily on exports, which grew 9% in 1998 while domestic beer consumption shrank by 2%.
