Oakham JHB Champion Beer of Britain
Hop Back Summer Lightning wins silver
July 31, 2001 - JHB brewed by Oakham of Peterborough has been judged to be the best beer in Britain by a panel of brewers, beer writers and journalists at the Great British Beer Festival. The festival continues through Saturday.
The beer is described in the 2001 edition of the Good Beer Guide as, "Impressive straw-coloured quaffing bitter with bold floral, grassy hop, grapefruit and kiwi fruit and a little sweetness followed by a long, dry aftertaste." It was runnerup for Champion Beer in 1999. The Real Ale Alamanac lists JHB at a modest 3.8% abv and notes the beer is bittered with British Challenger hops and uses U.S. Mount Hood hops for aroma. The Oakham-brewed beer was chosen as the overall winner from more than 50 finalists in eight categories including beers from tiny micros to major regional brewers. Oakham White Dwarf Wheat Beer won the gold in the specialty category. Roger Protz, one of the finalist judges and Editor of the Good Beer Guide said "For the first time ever the judges were unanimous in their decision. We were all astonished by the richness and complexity of the beer, with a beautiful balance between malt and hops, stunning aroma and a long bitter sweet finish." Jake Douglas, manager of Oakham Ales said: "It is a life time ambition and shows that the time and effort that goes into the brewing is all worthwhile.
