Ask Real Beer

November 1999

I'm trying to learn about a pre-prohibition brewery in Allentown, Pa. Not sure of the spelling but it's some variant of Lieberman, Liebermann, Leiberman or Leibermann. Any ideas?

That would be Lieberman Brewing Co., which went out of business in 1915. It was actually an offspring of the William Oberly brewery, founded in 1845, and had several other names along the way.
