Nestled among the moribund buildings known as downtown Albuquerque, The Anodyne stands out as a mankind's last best hope for the future. No, wait, that's Babylon 5. What Anodyne does offer is 11 pooltables and 11 taps pouring quality regional and national micros for $3.50 a pint. A medium-sized bar and a few lounge chairs offer seating to enjoy the brews and the Rock & Roll CD sounds. Unfortunately the ventilation is so poor that the second-hand smoke from the cigar and cigarette-smoking patrons make your clothes smell like an ashtray in the time it takes to enjoy one of their great pint or bottled beer selections.
As Albuquerque's downtown tries to cling to life amidst attacks from the anti-alcohol crowd and general neglect from inept elected politicians, it will be interesting to see if a leading-edge bar like Anodyne can turn a profit as nearby businesses like University Draft House and Alvardo Brewing crash and burn. The city's beer-appreciative crowd certainly wishes them the best of luck.
