Carver Brewing Company
A visit to Durango, Colorado wouldn't be complete without an
adequate stop at Carver's Bakery and Brewpub. Recent good
fortune allowed me to receive a personal tour of the brewing facilities
by owner and brewmaster Bill Carver. After viewing the space
efficient operation the next logical step was to thoroughly sample
the current production. The Animas City Amber Ale proved
to be somewhat cloudy, hoppy, aromatic, with a full-bodied palette
and medium carbonation. There was a nice balance with hops a bit
more pronounced over malt and a pleasant aftertaste. The Brown
Ale is light in color, with a light body, smooth and lightly
hopped. The Purgatory Pilsner was a light amber color,
well carbonated and had good head. Medium bodied and smooth, there
was a pleasantly hoppy palette. The Barley Wine, opaque
and sweet with an interesting aftertaste, went down easily with
the malt dominating slightly the hops. The Stout seemed
carbonated yet no head was present. Surprisingly light on the
palette, the roasted flavor was accompanied by a noticeable hops
presence.
The live music, freshly baked food, and cozy brewpub atmosphere
make Carver's one of Durango's must see attractions. Now check out their outdoor beer garden!
