Ignore the strip mall location and you'll be pleasantly
surprised at the McMenamins Oak Hills Brewpub. Three outdoor picnic
tables offer fresh air and an uninspiring view of the parking lot. Inside, the
seven-place bar offers the best spot to read the tap handles and run down the
beer list that includes 11 McMenamin's draught beers. A green chalkboard over
the bar displays the current draught selection. No smoking is allowed at the
bar so tasting of all the flavors will be unimpeded. Nearby, six small and six
large wooden tables with dark wood padded chairs are filled with diners and
drinkers alike. Additionally, nine booths offer very comfortable seating. The
decor features dark green printed carpet surrounded by dark green walls.
Numerous plants hag from the 10-foot maroon ceiling. Tasty pub food emanates
from the open kitchen just behind the bar. Farther back, windows offer a public
view into the brewhouse, with its hallmark custom painted brew
vessels.
Four wines join a single hard cider on the tap
lineup. Normally, one cask beer and one nitrogen-dispensed beer are on-line.
The cask-conditioned McMenamin's Hammerhead is a hazy amber with a great
hop flavor that dominates the substantial maltiness. The house Porter is
nitrogen-pushed and served cold, rather than at "cellar temperature." Beneath
the fine head lies a rich and chocolaty flavor and creamy mouthfeel. The
Rogue Brutal Bitter asserts an intense hoppy aroma and flavor where the
sharp bitterness lasts well into the finish. Half-gallon growlers stand poised
over the bar for those customers wishing to continue the flavor experience
later at home.
