Located in Washington D.C. just blocks from the capitol is the elegant Loews L'Enfant Plaza Hotel and its bar featuring beers from the Old Dominion Brewing Company. The small ground floor bar includes a TV blasting sports reporter's ramblings as a small model train circumnavigates the lounge area on an elevated track. The fancy brass and ceramic five-tap tower pours all the draughts for the lounge. A four four-ounce glasses are arranged in a wooden holder to form the sampler tray and runs $5.95. Pints are also available for $4.50.
The Patriot Amber Ale is a clear dark amber with a lasting head, light hop aroma, sharp hop flavor with any underlying caramel character. Overall, the medium bodied brew is dominated by a dry maltiness in the flavor and the hops wait to come through until the aftertaste. The Old Dominion Ale is a clear amber with a light hop aroma, nice hop-over-malt flavor, medium body and smooth mouthfeel that make for one clean ale. The Old Dominion Stout sports a creamy white head that doesn't hide the roasted aroma of this medium-bodied brew. The smooth malty flavor and creamy mouthfeel are followed by a nice slightly dry finish. The Oktoberfest is a clear dark amber with a malty aroma and flavor. The medium body is outmatched by the big malty flavor where some caramel is noticeable and the hops are very subdued.
The sign above the bar reads "Don't Drink More, Drink Better. "The brewery sends an adequate portion of their 23,000 barrel production this way and the bar reciprocates by advertising the brewery tours of Saturdays at 12, 2 and 4 pm, along with Sunday's single 2 pm event.Rootbeer is also available but the fancy 2 liter growlers are not. The hotel resides next to the L'Enfant Plaza METRO stop while the brewery is at 44633 Guilford Dr., Ashburn, Virginia (703)724-9100.
