Having entered the U.S. market via California in 1997, the Chang Malt Liquor if distributed for Beer Thai by K'cha-Thai Trading. The label sports the phrase Malt Lager for this Asian lager in response to the multitude of confusing and restrictive state labeling laws. This medium-bodied brew is a clear gold color and matches a crisp mouthfeel with a very bitter hop flavor. The rice seems to mellow the hops somewhat and creates a pleasant dry finish. At 4.5%, it seems less potent that that other popular Thai import found at most Thai restaurants in the U.S., but Chang is light enough for steamy Phoenix summers and spicy Asian cuisine.
