Pubs slash cost of pint
1982 prices mark 25th anniversary of pub guide
Sept 25, 2006 - British beer drinkers will get a taste of 1982 prices next week when pubs across the country cut the price of a pint to 62p (about $1.18) to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Good Pub Guide.
Many of the pubs in the guide, which publishes its 25th annual edition next week, will drop their prices from a national average of £2.33 a pint to 62p. Many of them will also offer some dishes at 1982 prices. The Drunken Duck in Hawkshead, Cumbria, is one of the pubs planning to celebrate the 25th anniversary. It will be selling Cracker Ale - named after the pub dog back in 1982 - along with a special "retro menu," including chicken in a basket, chocolate fudge cake and jam roly poly. Alistair Aird, who had edited the guide since the days he compiled it on a typewriter, pointed out: "If price changes in the next 25 years come to echo those of our first quarter of a century, be prepared for a national average beer price of £8.40 a pint, with Londoners paying up to £10.60."
