Woman dies during rioting after beer train wrecks

Aug 24, 2005 - Hundreds of looters clashed with police t the site of a beer train wreck in South Africa, escalating violence that left one dead.

According to police reports, the train carrying 180,000 crates of beer from South African Breweries derailed near Waterval Boven, 124 miles east of Johannesburg.

By the next morning, police were trying to control 200 people from the nearby township trying to steal. The police fired rubber bullets as looters swarmed the train. A 19-year-old woman was killed after falling under the wheels of the truck.

Officers later raided nearby homes, where they recovered three of 500 missing cases and arrested six people.
