Illinois churches offer Theology-on-Tap

July 8, 2004 - Churches in northern Illinois will be mixing bibles and beer in the coming weeks. Theology-on-Tap, a speaker and discussion series hosted by parishes and Roman Catholic centers in the Chicago and Rockford area, begins Sunday and continues into August.

David Tom, a volunteer young adult ministry leader for St. Edna Parish in Arlington Heights, said the programs focus on young adults - married or single - in their 20s and 30s.

Parishes provide refreshments that may include beer. "It's a very welcoming, open environment," Tom said.

St. Edna has been participating in Theology-on-Tap for four years. "We've been pretty successful," Tom said. "We've been able to meet new people and share some spiritual and pertinent thoughts from the speakers with the young adults."

Tom said a pastor from St. James Parish in Arlington Heights went into a local pub 24 years ago to discuss spiritual matters with college students. The discussion was so successful that it was developed into the Theology-on-Tap series.
