In 1979, the American Homebrewers Association originally claimed National Homebrew Day to be the first Saturday in May. On May 7, 1988, Congress officially recognized National Homebrew Day.

Big Brew began in 1998, with homebrewers meeting at central locations and often brewing special recipes formulated for the day. This year's recipes feature new styles that are being added to the latest addition of the Beer Judge Certification Program style guidelines - Baltic Porter, Imperial IPA, and Irish Red Ale.
