Pete's mines international gold

Alaskan Brewing, Deschutes also shine in Brewing Industry competition

Alaskan Brewing Co. of Juneau and Deschutes Brewing Co. of Bend, Ore., also captured gold. Alaskan won for its ESB, which followed by capturing Champion Beer in the International Ale Competition. Deschutes won gold with its Mirror Pond Pale Ale.

These awards are sometimes called "the oscars of the brewing industry." First run in 1886, they honor excellence in "the commercial worth of the beer quality" and are only judged by currently practicing professional brewers. Beers are judged in eight categories, each with three sub-classes, for a total of 24 classes and just 72 medals.

The 2002 judging was in February in Burton upon Trent. The actual medal rankings and Champion Beers were revealed Tuesday in a ceremony in London that is the centerpiece of the National Annual Luncheon of the Brewing, Food and Beverage Industry Suppliers Association.
