Father's Day 2003
What are you gonna give him?

Father's Day is June 15, and many dads will tell you there isn't a gift better than something beer related. Here are some ideas:

1. Buy him a beer on Father's Day. While many brewpubs offer menus that make them appropriate for Mother's Day dining, heading to a bar or brewpub seems like a better idea on Father's Day. That way you can make it a beer, dinner and a grand celebration.

2. Buy him a beer with his buddies. Don't forget that drinking beer is a social experience, for some just an excuse to hang out with friends. So drop by his favorite watering hole, arrange in advance to pay the tab and tell dad he and his friends may drop by at their leisure.

3. Buy him a special beer. Looking for a beer out of the ordinary? Beer of the month clubs ship both American-made specialty beers and imports. He'll receive beers that aren't otherwise available locally.

4. Help him brew better beer. Homebrewing equipment can be pretty personal -- not lingerie personal, but not something to guess about. If dad is a homebrewer and has been leaving hints about a specific pH meter he'd like or that he needs another carboy, then shopping is easy. Otherwise, it's best to ask him or a brewing buddy. If he's just starting, you might consider an all-in-one kit.

5. Take him brewing. At a brew on premise, you and dad can spend an afternoon or evening making beer, then drink it together a few weeks later. Not every town has a BOP, but you'll usually find them under "Breweries" in the Yellow Pages.

6. Send him on a beer trip. If you want to make it a really big deal consider a trip overseas through a travel service. Or you can buy him a plane ticket to a brewing Mecca such as Munich or Portland, Oregon. Or a trip to the Great British Beer Festival (in August), or the Great American Beer Festival (October). The possibilities are endless.

7. Set up a brewery tour. Generally, the best idea is to call and find out when a nearby brewpub or brewery offers regular tours. You can try to schedule a special tour, but remember that small breweries are just that, and brewers already tend to put in long hours.

8. Add to his non-liquid library. Beer specific books abound -- about the brewing process, the history of beer, cooking with beer, tasting beer, collecting beer cans and on and on. You'll find plenty at BeerBooks.com

9. Get him a date with with Mabel. Sorry, but you can't actually get him a date with Mabel from "Hey, Mabel, Black Label!" but you can buy videos of vintage beer commercials from the 1950s. In addition to Mabel there's footage of that great Hamm's Bear ("From the land of sky blue waters").

10. Buy him beer clothes or accessories. From boxer shorts to heavy duty jackets, there's beer apparel that should fit your father. You don't have to stop there. Consider the obvious, such as coasters or glasses from his favorite brewery, but also the less obvious. Briefcases and mouse pads aren't found as easily, but may make a more special gift.
