Good afternoon,
We've been getting a lot of questions about Zwanse Day, so it's time to get the info out to you all. This Saturday, December 1st, at noon we are very excited to be tapping a keg of Cantillon Zwanse beer in honor of, well, Zwanse Day. The Toronado is fortunate to be one of only 16 places in the US and one of only 35 places worldwide to get a keg of this exceedingly rare beer from Belgium's premier lambic producer. The first keg will be tapped at 9pm in Brussels, with simultaneous tappings occurring worldwide (except Japan, where it will be 5 o'clock in the morning) and 9pm in Belgium is noon here in the PST zone. So what, you're asking yourself, is Zwanse? In Flemish, zwanse is a joke; a zwanser is a prankster. The goal of Cantillon's 3rd generation brewer Jan Van Roy was to make an unusual, "fun" beer using non-traditional ingredients. This year, that means rhubarb. Here, from the Cantillon website, is their description of the beer:

We will not be selling tickets or anything like that; the doors will be open at the usual time of 11:30 am, and as we mentioned, we'll tap the keg at noon. We should get a yield of roughly 150 six oz glasses from the 30 liter keg, so it shouldn't be that hard to get one if you're here around 12. We also are very fortunate to have a keg of 2008 Cantillon Lou Pepe Kriek, as well as some bottles of Cantillon Classic Gueuze, Iris, and Vignerrone on the shelf, so make sure you're here this Saturday, as these beers will certainly be gone by the evening. We are hopeful to have a shirt printed to commemorate the event, we'll keep you posted on that.
Something we ARE selling tickets for is our Holiday Beer Brunch scheduled for Sunday December 9th from 10:30am until 2pm. We'll be getting together with Nate tomorrow to choose a bunch of great Christmas and/ or holiday beers from all over the world to be paired with some great food from his exalted Soroko-ness. Tickets are $35 and are available at Ticketderby.com.
Further out, we'll be doing an amazing night of Stone Vertical Epic draft rarities on Wednesday 12/12/12, and starting on the first we'll start tapping a mind-blowing array of Christmas beers from Belgium and beyond. And speaking of Christmas beers, a welcoming shout out (you have to shout to be heard above the Tibetan prayer wheels!) to Bill Snider from Ciao Travel who is your go-to guy for travel to Belgium and beyond; check out Ciao Travel on the web for more info on their amazing beer tours and more. That's it for now, we'll see you soon...
