I just got over the fact that I can't find any more Sam Adams Octoberfest here in KC. There was lots in New Mexico (the 12 packs!) at Walgreens when I was out there a couple of weeks ago. I liked it. Nice initial salty malty subtle acetic acid mouthfeel, warm hoppy finish. OK, we'll see what it's like NEXT year.
Onto Winter Ales...
I really like the New Belgium Snow Day, but will leave that for another post.
Right now, it is the deschutes Jubelale.
This is my second sixpack of this year's jubelale, and there have been times when I detect whiskey. Am I wrong? From the casks?
Aside from that, I love the balance of dark roasted grain and and fresh bitter finish. Damn good.

I got to try this last night at a Syracuse Beer Week event.
New York Comic Con is nearly upon us, and to celebrate this most imaginative and animated occasion we’ve tapped into our inner nerd (didn’t have to dig too far) and brewed up a limited-edition draft-only hoppy amber IPA named The Defender. The liquid portion of The Defender was designed by Brewmaster and certified Sci-Fi geek Garrett Oliver, the logo by vintage DC Comics logo designer Milton Glaser, and the hero himself by Tony Millionaire. Best known for Drinky Crow and the Maakies comic series, Mr. Millionaire’s first regularly published strip was in the “The Waterfront Week”, a Williamsburg-based newspaper well known in our north Brooklyn neighborhood. Years after doing us the honor of making our first neighborhood map, Tony has returned to grace us with The Brooklyn Defender personified, a masked hero come to rescue us from the brewing Megaliths.
Will be going out to dinner with the missus in a little bit at the Stattion Taproom in Downingtown, PA and the tap list includes Jolly Pumpkin Madrugada, Hill Farmstead Holger Danske, Schneider Aventinus, and Sly fox Christmas alle as well as others. I will be drinking at least three of those four.
One Weird Red Octoberfest leftover I got a local HyVee in Kansas City. HyVee has LOTS of variety, and quality. But the beer is Shmaltz's Freaktoberfest, or "Red Blood Lager", on sale as "closeout". I could not resist.
I poured it into a pint glass, and noticed swirls of red "die" filling the glass (I normally do not shake my beer before opening). It settled into a really red beer (not grain red, but "died" red). I can drink it, even though it is red, and it is actually good. Here is more knowledgeable info from Banjo on this brewer...
Thanks Banjo!
OK
So it's been awhile
Last week I went to Stauton,Va and I found Queen City Brewers
Thought I would share them with any one in Va area.
Great place to buy growlers and 6's.
IMO, I walked away with a sense that it's the best beer I've ever had.
Like to know if any Va folks know about them, cheers
