This week's Beer of the Week is New Holland's "The Poet" Oatmeal Stout. I first had this beer this past Tuesday at this month's Beer Senate (what's a beer senate?
I wrote about it here.), and I'm glad I did.
The Poet pours a dark, nearly black color. The tan head is quiet large and lacing is very good and sticky.
The beer's rich aroma is a mix of roasted yet creamy malts, chocolate, and sweet caramel and toffee.
The sweetness and dark malts hit the tongue first, followed by notes of chocolate and coffee. There's a slight hop bitterness followed by a dry finish.
The Poet is a full-bodied beer with good carbonation. Mouthfeel is very smooth and creamy due to the oatmeal (oatmeal adds special mouthfeel-enhancing proteins).
Appearance: 9/10
Aroma: 4/5
Taste: 8/10
Mouthfeel: 5/5
Overall: 17/20
Total: 4.3/5
