first hydrometer questions.

First hydrometer reading questions.
Ok.first brew is done!!! Sanitized the hydometer and my hands and took the reading directly in the ferment bucket due to having no test jar or wine thief or turkey baster. Anyway does OG of 1.176 sound about right for a high gravity IPA?

That's either a HUUUUUGE beer, or the wrong set of numbers. I'm not sure about all hydrometers, but mine has 4 sets of linearized measurements. I'd check it one more time to be sure.

On the other hand, how many pounds of grain/extract did you add? I've never brewed anything that strong, but generally when I saw someone post their OG for a strong beer it was never that high. I think my hydrometer actually maxes out at 1.17.

Did you perhaps mean 1.076?

Maybe... It said 1.100 then several notches above that it said 70 and it was three little notches above that 70 so I just thought it meant 1.176 maybe your right at 1.076

Another question...
I have a three piece airlock and I used starsan in it up to the line and its actually bubbling up out of the top a little bit. is that ok? It's not making a mess really but a bit did come out.... And it is constantly bubbling in the airlock so thats a good sign right?

Don't worry about the StarSan coming out of the top, mine does that all the time. I actually think it's kind of fun. I'd keep an eye on the actual liquid level, it shouldn't run out but it's always worth a look every now and then. As for the OG, can you give me the malt extract amounts in pounds?

You really don't need starsan in the airlock. I've used plain water for 20 years. I even had a friend who brewed his first 5 batches with no liquid in it, nobody told him to put anything in the airlock.

LOL. I use StarSan in the airlock when I'm going to age it for a while in a secondary. For whatever reason, it doesn't seem to evaporate.

Ok let me make sure i am reading this right, do you mean there was a total of 18.3lbs of malt extract in there? If so Beer smith is projecting it to come out at around 1.133 for just the malt extract so it is possible that you read it right once you add in the steeped grains.

It looks like clltr double-pasted his ingredients. With only one of each of his ingredients, it comes out 1.071. With a little more boil-off to a bit less than 5 gallons, 1.076 is believable. I think it may just be a case of getting used to reading a scale that runs down the stem, instead of upwards like a thermometer. The fix? Get a refractometer!
