Westvleteren 12, rated best beer in the world, coming to Jacksonville Florida

It has been rated the Best Beer in the World by RateBeer.com users. And it's coming to Jacksonville.

Trappist Westvleteren 12 is a quadrupel brewed by the monks at the Abbey of Saint Sixtus in Westvleteren, Belgium. Until now, you had to go to Belgium to buy it, or get it from someone who has been there. Even if you made the trip to Saint Sixtus, buying it is a challenge (the process is described on this website).

Technically, you're not supposed to be able to buy Westvleteren beer anywhere except the abbey and its adjacent cafe, although it has been available for a premium from internet resellers and under the table at some bars catering to beer geeks.

But in order to fund an expansion and repairs at the abbey, the monks decided to sell a limited amount of their beer in Belgium and export some of the 12 to the United States.

Total Wine & More at St. Johns Town Center is getting some, and will put it on sale – first-come, first-served – on Dec. 12 for $84.99 a six-pack, including two glasses. There's a limit of one six-pack per customer.

The current official rate at the brewery is €39 – about $50 – for a case of 24. But this way, you don’t have to buy that ticket to Belgium or worry about shipping. And hey, you get two glasses. Also, you have to consider that the beer lovingly referred to as Westie 12 has gone for $40 to upward of $100 a bottle on some websites.

Reservations won’t be taken, you have to show up to purchase the beer. The store opens at 9 a.m. Dec. 12.

The beer is 10.2 percent alcohol by volume, but at that price, who’s counting?
