agreed. we really need to narrow things down. If you read the specs, it's stuff like "moderately low to moderately high hop aroma"
uhhhh, that's a mighty big range to play with. But I guess that's what's great about this 'hobby' is that we can adjust to our own liking. I can tell you already that I will shoot a little lower on IBUs when I brew this as I don't care for really bitter beers a 1.055 I'd try to shoot for the low range of hops.. 35 or so. Just like in the last issue of BYO just because it's called "bitter" doesn't mean that it has to be ;-)
I know.. just saying that the range of IBUs depending on OG can go from balanced/slightly hoppy to outright bitter.
I wasn't sure I wanted to do this, but I'll throw this out, for starters/discussion
8.5 lbs MO
1/2 lb crystal 60
1 oz black patent
1.5 oz EKG @ 60
.5 oz EKG at 15
at 80% that hits OG 1.053, SRM 15, IBU 36
I don't have Marris Otter in my grain list specifically, but used british pale for the calcs.
anyway, starting point at least.
I figure we can make everyone happy though....each brew can have a diffrent format...
one brew can be a specific recipe down to what grains hops yeast to use...... the diffrences in peoples efficiancy/mash scheduals/steeping methods/water etc etc will all have wildly diffrent results in how the brews come out anyways.
Can do a interpretation brew where a style is picked with a few guidlines on hopes malts etc but leave the amounts times etc etc up to the brewer.... Etc etc
But here is what I propose.... Otis this was your idea so I say get a panel of a few people on here and you guys can take ideas of types and diffrent formats make a decision and post what the community brew will be. If we dont get a person or a small group of people to make the major decisions it will never get done lol and I elect Otis as Head of the community brew project.
OK I just had a side discussion with Danno,
(danno you have a PM)
Lets get a few things out of the way here.
1) put yourself down if you are going to partisipate.
2) Extract or AG?
3) Do we decide on a recipe and stick to it, or do your own thing?
4) do we go with Austin Homebrew Supply?
5) if your going to partisipate, are you willing to ship two bottles to X number of fellow brewers after completion for evaluation? (I agree with Danno on this one and go with 3 fellow brewers.
6) can brew and bottle and ship on/around May 1st. (I think we need to evaluate these side by side, so aome consistency needs to be introduced.)"

The Liver is Evil, therefore it must be punished....
3) I say decide on a very narrow style interpretation
4) I'd be willing to order everything for this batch from AHS
5) I will definately ship bottles
6) May 1st is WAY too soon - I have recipes planned and in the works, trying to get bottles to SA's Longshot and fill some empty kegs - maybe push it to July 1st

My posts are definitive. Reality is frequently inaccurate.
1) I am in
2) AG (woohooies nice to be able to say that)
3) Recipe this time
4) If they do us a good deal AH is just fine with me!
5) I will ship to 3(hell would ship to everyone if I could afford it)
6) thats plenty of time I believe
