I just started using star san, and I notice a slimey feeling on stuff that I soaked for ten of fifteen miunutes and then let dry...this is once is has been re-wet, as when i go to clean after use. I notice with stoppers and tubing in particular. Also, I store it in my bottling bucket for a day or so, like this weekend when I transferred to secondary on Sat. and brewed a new batch on sunday.

Will star san ruin plastic that fast?

Yeah, but all the plastic that has a slimey feeling to it has rinsed just fine....

BTW, how long should something contact in star san for sanitation?

I've heard between 30 seconds and 3 minutes, but most people say 1-2 minutes. So I aim for two to three minutes.

I sent an email to Five Star, maybe they'll pop in and take care of these questions and issues so there is no doubt.

Both. You will reach in and pick one up and it will feel like you just stuck your hand into a vat of rotten nasty vaseline. It is just disgusting and there is no way you would ever want to use that piece of line for anything ever again.

If Charlie does pop in it would be great. He is a font of knowledge!

I take it then I should not use it to put my blow-off tube in?

I was reading the Northernbrewer catalog and it says 1-2 minutes.

Yeah, but I am most curious abot the degradation of plastic products, and what they have to say about that.

If you leave it for the few minutes to sanitize, you will be fine. It only seems to slimify if it has extended contact time (overnite for me).

Cool Star San

Star San is based on phosphoric acid, being an acid is is very friendly to s/s. When storing the use solution of Star San keep these things in mind. First it is still active as long as the pH is below 3, and the solution is clear. When the solution turns cloudy the soap in Star San has reacted with the mineral in the make-up water and has made the final solution useless. A good way of getting around this is to make up the Star San up with D.I. Water.

Keeping Star is plastic or in Stainless Steel is OK as long as the first two comments are met.

Star San will kill just about every organism known to man in 30 seconds.

And last but not least is the foam. Since Star San will not kill when the pH goes above 3 any small amount left in a bottle or a keg will not stop the furmentation process and it is safe to drink the beer that is what comes out of the package. That is why Star San has a no rinse claim.

Oh one more thing Star San is an acid and it will make a mess of counter-tops and rugs if it is spilled on them be carfull when using it.

Charlie

Thanks Charlie,

It is always great to see the professionals who keep us going make posts so that our questions get answers from those who are the authorities, and there is no doubt or confusion.
