STL - Beer sells, so does a book about beer - "Bitter Brew"

Beer sells, even a book about beer

St. Louis Business Journal by E.B. Solomont

Beer sells in this town, even when its a book about beer. So much so that an event tonight featuring “Bitter Brew,” a new book about Anheuser-Busch and the Busch family, had to be moved to accommodate a larger-than-expected crowd.
Left Bank Books, which is hosting journalist and author William Knoedelseder tonight at 7 p.m., sent out a mass e-mail this week announcing the switch in venue, from the 3,500-square-foot shop in the Central West End to the 5,000-square-foot downtown store. The event is co-sponsored by Bridge Tap House & Wine Bar.
The bookstore originally expected between 75 people and 100 people to attend, said Danielle Borsch, the store’s events coordinator. But media attention, phone calls and book sales pointed to greater interest, she said. In the past week, Left Bank sold 50 copies of “Bitter Brew,” which retails for $27.99. Borsch said she’s now expecting 250 people tonight.
Left Bank Books hosts between 200 and 300 events a year, ranging from intimate gatherings with fewer than a dozen attendees to large-scale events, like the Sept. 24 book launch for former Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa’s “One Last Strike,” which attracted thousands.
Still, “Bitter Brew” has gotten more traction than “Dethroning the King: The Hostile Takeover of Anheuser-Busch, an American Icon,” a 2011 book by Julie MacIntosh that chronicles the beer company’s takeover by InBev.
“This book is focused on the family and the entire history of the company,” said Borsch, of “Bitter Brew.”
“I should tell you,” she said, “when (people) get to the downtown store (tonight), we’ll be redirecting them to the lower level event space that we share with Bridge. “So there will be beer,” she added. Amen to that.
