Now, there's a great idea! Thanks a lot. I've been wanting to set up a kegerator also, and I was considering having some 2.5 or 3 gal cornies for when I want to bottle some and then keg.

...and CAMRA will excommunicate you.

HogieWan 09-09-2005 12:22 PM

I'm not a member. If CAMRA cares, they can buy me a real cask.

gallowd7 09-09-2005 12:37 PM

Who do you play for down there, Pax River? I've played with Severn for the last 10+ years (flyhalf) but haven't been very active this past year, (kids/sailing have taken priority).

lordkenpo 09-09-2005 12:39 PM

But then you and the wife would have to drink it, and then we're back to square one.

That is a great idea though - CAMRA should fundraise to get the word out. By which I mean give me a cask and Radio Flyer and let me go door to door on Saturday mornings spreading the gospel.

Annapolis is not out of my realm for cask ale! Let me know when you guys get set up. :D

lordkenpo 09-09-2005 01:01 PM

Whoa, this is getting creepy. I used to play for the college; PAX has been trying to recruit me for 2 years, but I'm holding out because tight-head propping for 4 years thoroughly trashed my left ankle. I promised after I lost a good bit of weight I'd give it another go, but I'm still working toward that goal.

I know a bunch of guys that play for Gorge and a few other teams in the area, and I played a game or two up on Severn's field while I was still active. We went to some crazy pig roast after a tourney up there; t'was good times all around. Of course, at the time I was still swilling BMC, but that's neither here nor there.

I could easily get some friends to help drink it, or make it a homebrew club special event.

gallowd7 09-09-2005 01:15 PM

Hogie: Get cracking! Let's see, one week for keg delivery and primary, one week secondary, one week in keg. How about a report on Oct. 3rd

Chaz: I'm just 10 minutes off 50. If it's good you can stop by on your way to the ocean.

chazwicke 09-09-2005 01:19 PM

;)

HogieWan 09-09-2005 01:20 PM

You forgot about the "one year to get wife to realize what good beer is" that comes before all that

lordkenpo 09-09-2005 01:41 PM

Chaz and Gallowd, check your PMs.

Take a look at the BYO article featured "Build a Beer Engine: Projects (Jan, 2005)". I built mine last Nov. for a total of $30. And works perfectly with cornys.

Yesterday I gutted the mini-fridge, put spray-foam on almost all of the cooling element (it's one of the fridges that cools with the freezer compartment) and cut a hole in the side in which I put a piece of 3/4" ID pvc to allow for the line. With the spray-foam on the freezer I am at about 45-50 deg. I'll build the stand for the hand pump this week.

Wild- Any tips or tricks about dispensing?

Yes. If you're building the cheap hand pump like I did, inverting the keg above the pump will save on blisters. At our last Real Ale fest, I drained my corny in less than 2 hours. The pump, in the pulled position (pulled towards you), will keep the pump primed for the next glass full.

Disclaimer: My apologies to all CAMRA and Real Ale fans for my statement.
To prevent any air from your beer and still not "push" your beer with CO2, fill a second corny with ambient CO2, connect your beer to the Out QD, and open the pressure release valve. This will pull CO2 into your beer keg to fill unused space only. This is more work, I know, but it will alleviate any worries if your beer isn't emptied between sessions.
Note: Disconnect your beer between sessions to minimize oxidation also.
