There is beer in Utah, in abundance and much of it mighty good. I'm a homebrewer so my market purchases have dropped off of late. That being said, you can find most international and domestic brands at the store or the state run liquer store. We have a handful of microbrews, the Desert Edge Brewery being the best for my money. Uinta Brewery is also headquartered here and they consistantly field a good to superior product, the Cutthroat Pale Ale being a noteworthy standout.
It's true the grocery stores may only sell beer that's 3.2 Alc by weight, and wine/spirits may only be purchased at state run stores. But the 3.2 thing is more hype than anything. Higher alcohol point beer can be had at the state stores, but half the time the price difference is so great it's a rip off. There are plenty of 3.2 beers that are as good or better for half the price.
The local cultural climate here does make taverns kind of tricky, we have a lot of rules and regulations for bar owners, it's a wonder any of them make it, but that's one of the consequences of having your town founded by millinerian wackos.
I have lived and travelled in a number of places, mostly on my own and some with the military and I can honestly say that Utah is somewhere in the middle of the road if you need a drink.
Any Utah homebrewers reading this: I am trying to get an informal Salt Lake brewers club together, make some noise if your interested.
Until Later,
Best.
