The wife bought me a variety of bottled ales for Valentine's Day. What a girl! Anyways, one was 1554 Black Ale, brewed by the New Belgian Brewery in CO. Has anyone tasted it and have an opinion? I found it to have a noticable aroma and flavor of toasted malts with chocolate, a malt finish with light hops, not too sweet. New Belgian Brewery claims it has discovered an ancient Belgium receipe referenced to 1554 AD.

I’ve never tried one but it sounds like I’m going to have to hunt one down. :)

I do enjoy this brew. I like some of the other brews by New Belgium better. Give their Abbey a try. Even the Trippel is decent. Don't even get me started on the seasonals. Usually very good.

A little over 2 years old, but: http://www.realbeer.com/discussions/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1518&highlight=1554

I was a very big fan of the 1554 until about 2 years ago but I found that the taste has changed. The flavor has seemed to lose some of its complexity. I had the opportunity to try both bottle and draught and never went back.
