i called the Abbaye in philly last night, and they told me they were tapping their keg of Heavyweight's Regal Pale Ale at 9pm. i already had plans for dinner at the Independence brewpub, and of course i stopped off before dinner for a Yards ESA from the handpump.

so i got to the Abbaye around 9:30-10:00 after about 5 other local micros.. unfortunately my palette was not as fresh as i'd have liked, but so it goes.... anyway, the Abbaye is a nice little beer bar with a good selection of taps: a leikheim, victory golden monkey, etc. my goal, naturally, was the Regal Pale Ale.

i have to admit i was a little disappointed, but not a bad beer. very stong bitterness and a noticable alcohol taste. the bitterness was not so crisp as i would have liked, and it lingered on the tongue, tasting almost a little sour. nicely fullbodied, good flavor. didn't notice too much hop aroma, but like i said, my tastebuds were a little overwhelmed already.

overall, i thought it was a good beer that was perhaps just a little young. might have benefited from a few more weeks of conditioning. but thats just me... ;)

anyone else get a chance to try this?

The fates conspired against me and, even tho I went to NYC last night, and was probably less than a mile from the Blind Tiger, I didn't make it. And the wife is set on heading "down the shore" tonight, so no open house at Heavyweight, either...

At least it doesn't seem like I'm missing too much in this beer...I guess I'll have to be happy with a fourpack of Lunacy...
