this friday i will try my hand at my new kegging system.....i've heard varying opinions on forced carbonation, etc....my local HB shop recommends starting with about 18 lbs or so for a few days, then back it off to serving pressure (8 lbs) for a couple more days...and that should produce good carbonation.....any input??

If I have the time, I'll just hook the keg up at serving pressure for 7 days in the fridge and it is good to go. If I am in a rush, I'll cool it and shake the hell out of it at about 12 psi until the reg stops hissing, then serve.
