So I finally have my draft system up and running (:D ) I don't have any of my own beer to drink just yet and the superbowl is this weekend so I thought I would just go out and buy a keg of some C.A.B. (yes I will drink crappy light beer, I am not a beer snob!)
Well I guess the laws have changed since I was in college about getting a keg in NY
10 deposit on the keg - no big deal
75 bucks NY registration fee for the keg
Fill out forms
sticker on keg
keg has to be returned in 90 days or you don't get your money back.
WTF????
I guess this was to discourage underage drinking? What about the isles full of 30 packs????
I guess this isin't too new of a law. The owner said they barely sell any kegs anymore. I thought I would have trouble with it being so close to SuperBowl weekend.
Another example of politicians sitting around making up laws for no good reason other than to show that they did something while in office!
NY SUCKS!
It is cool to have draft beer in my house though!

Same here in RI. Keg registration is all the rage. Pols claim it curbs underage drinking (fewer keg parties), when all it really does (and studies have shown it) is push teenagers towards 30 packs and hard alcohol which can't be tracked. Laws will never curb drinking. Education about responsible drinking, beginning at the home level, would be a good start.
Enjoy your beer and the game.
Cheers!

I'm glad it has not come to that in VA/MD/DC/PA yet. You generally have to fill out a short form and VA does put a sticker on but there is no registration fee. You usually have to pay a deposit and that fee is set by the seller only to guarantee the keg return. I usually have 2 sixtels on my kegerator.

have you had any issues buying a keg in one state to "use" in another?

Nope. All of mine end up at my beach place in Maryland. I have purchased sixtels in PA, VA, DE and never had a problem. Of course when I get them at Old Dominion I usually use my home address as I live fairly near them. The other places never commented on my address.

If kids want to be idiots and drink they will. We never bought a keg when I was in highschool, Too much of a hastle.
In college ( I was in a fraternity) We held a lot of parties with bands etc. Usually went through 10-15 kegs a night. We never filled out anything. Just went around back and picked up what ever was cheapest.
I will be buying my kegs from MA from now on. I've got to believe there is a small impact on buisness in NY for not buying kegs.

I know the city of Boston has keg registration now (or they were pushing for it recently). Not sure if it's spread to western MA. That would impact a lot of colleges out there!

When in college we got kegs for the fraternity house. We got them from the Albertson's grocery store. The weirdest thing was that when you bought a case or sixer, they checked your ID and anyone who was with you. They wouldn't sell unless everyone was of age. However, I or anyone else who got a keg was never carded.

The NY law is only about 2 years old but be glad it has changed in that time. Originally, you only had 30 days to return the keg or you lost your deposit. Too many businesses complained and they ammended the law to 90 days.

Not long after I got my kegerator they instituted this law...but kegs had to be returned in **30** days! I was so happy when they changed it to 90 days. Too much pressure to drink up the keg in a month.

Yes, yes it is.
