View Full Version : Question about clarifiers

Hey all. This morning I'm brewing a Belgian Wit and when I opened my packet there was no Irish Moss to clarify. Since I also have a Porter kit and since I'm not making that until Friday I snagged the clarifier out of that.
I will contact my LHBS, but if they can't get it to me by the time I am ready to brew, can I make the Porter without the clarifier,
OR
is there something else I might have around my house that I can use?
Thanks.

This is totally unrelated to your question Soxy, cause I'm not qualified to answer it yet, but yesterday while bottling and brewing I wondered how your wedding brews are coming along...still on schedule?

You can make the porter without it if necessary. The porter will be opaque anyway. Nobody will notice a haze.

Brewdog, that was kind of my thinking; it's a nice, dark Porter, so it shouldn't make a difference. Thanks
Gone Fishing : we are a bit behind schedule, but brewing onwards. The first batch of Wit stalled a bit and I had to bring it upstairs, but I should be bottling that on Saturday.
The California Common, half of which is a Raspberry now is ready to bottle as well, thanks to a little warmer weather when it started so I'll probably bottle it next Sunday.
The Wit I'm making today will be left upstairs to ferment; covered & cowering from the light.
Friday the Porter gets made.
After that it's Eurolager & right this second I can't remember what else  And we're on our way.
My future son-in-law will be here in march and wants to learn to brew so I may have him make a "Grooms batch" of something that doesn't take as long to condition.
OH, and the Mead we made last year should be openable at the wedding!
So they're moving on and thanks for asking !

A wit really does not need a clarifier due to the high amounts of wheat which will cloud the beer anyhow. Also, I question the need of a clarifier with the porter too seeing how dark it will be. Belgian yeasts are very temp sensative and like the warmth. This is probably the reason for the stalling.

Yeah. The basement was DEFINITELY too cold for the poor thing. Like I said, the one I made today is staying upstairs!
I've actually had some luck getting clear, sparkling wits with the Irish Moss so I had rather use it on the wit than the porter...Hey it's dark, who'll notice.
And if it's too hazy, I'll save those aside until the guests have had a few...
