View Full Version : Water filter as beer filter?

Saw a water filter housing at HD for $17. It takes any of a variety of filter cartidges, one of which is a simple sediment/rust filter rated 5 microns. I'm thinking I could put this in the siphon hose between my secondary fermenter and bottling bucket. Anybody tried this or can think of a reason why it wouldn't work? Still trying to get wife's beer as clear as I can get it.

Gravity won't push it - you need a draft setup and push beer from keg to keg through the filter.

AFA clear beer goes - make sure you boil your wort hard, use irish moss in the boil, get a wort chiller and have patience.

I've also heard that once you filter your beer you must force carbonate it. Reason being that filtering removes the yeast along with the unmentionables.

Go with Hogie's advice. I have a filtration setup and it's not nearly worth the trouble. Practice good brewing techniques and your beer will be clear.

Brew more often to keep your stock up. Then all your beer will have plenty of time to clear.

That's another good idea, if you have spce and equipment. I have about 18 cornies and I always have 30-50 gallons on hand. That way I always have time for lagering and carbonating without ever running out. I run out of one batch, but there is always something to take its place. The filter is handy if I have a newly filled keg that I need to use for a particular reason like a oarty. I'll filter it and then force carbonate at 30 lbs while shaking the keg. Otherwise I let father time clear my beer.

Well, I do have to admit that the recipe called for irish moss and i forgot to toss it in.
18 Cornies????????? Wow... you do this seriously !:)

I'm up to six cornies and four are always full. I have been trying to bottle more lately also to free up kegs and for gifting. I also have my little competition stash of bottles going. Those are prohibited from anyone to drink. But 18 that is just nuts. Are you married corky??

I'm thinking that I'll start with 5 or 6 cornies when I can finally afford to make my kegerator... I can assure you though, if I had 18 of the suckers I'd need to make a shelter out of them cause my wife would toss my ass out!

The wife doesn't have to know everything. As long as I keep it all in the garage(where I am the Lord and Master) she's OK with it. She knows my hobby keeps me out of the bars and saves us money.

Ahhh, well, that theory works well for my fishing stuff, but the garage is only so big... the brew stuff is in the house and basement. She'd see all those cornies!

No way! I have, um, 14 cornies, you'd be suprised how easily they are put away in the garage. Unfortunately, only three of mine have anything in them right now.

I use the same setup with a 1 micron filter for a quickie beer. (Skipping secondary due to over powering thirst.) Hogie is right, you'll need a kegging setup to filter, and if you're trying to filter, there'll be no reason to keg/bottle condition. If you use all the suggestions listed together, i.e., Irish moss, wort chiller, and crash your beer a couple of weeks while you're force carbing it will really do the trick. If you can't keg yet, crashing your beer for 2-3 weeks prior to bottling will greatly help.
Good luck,
Wild

the week after our 20th party we went on a beer run thru Holland and Belgium. This time we may head off to Germany. We have some good friends south of Frankfurt who've been inviting us for years but the last time we tried to visit them they were in the States on vacation.

back to the original question, you don't want to use a home water filter system because it will get nasty in an extremely short period of time, and you'll either spend a fortune on changing filters, or you'll wreck subsequent beers. think about what you're filtering, all the organic material. you want that sitting around, getting moldy and gross, and then running more beer through the filter? yuck...

Actually, the rust sediment 5 micron filter cartridge is very cheap so I was thinking of a one-time use for this particular batch that I forgot the Irish moss in. I plan on buying this particular filter with some much better cartridges to filter my tap water for clorine anyway, just thought I might buy it sooner, with that extra simpler cartridge. Oh well, hopefully time will clear it enough anyway.
