Hello everyone:
I'm new here and recently 'discovering' beer again after ten years of almost exclusively drinking wine.
My question:
I love Budweiser. Its a rice beer and a number of people here turn their nose up at it and say it can't be called 'beer' because theres no malt in it!
I'm looking for a decent rice beer or similar here in New Zealand thats like a Bud. The Bud's are import prices so expensive.
I'm learning.
Thanks in advance!

dudweiser, good for hangovers in the morning because of the rice

There probably is a percentage of malted barley (right?), but with a lot of adjunct--rice, probably some sucrose, etc. Definitely a tastebud killer and hangover inducer.

Hi soundscape, and welcome. Are you looking for a commercial similar beer, or looking to brew your own?

bud is somewhere around 60% malt, 40% rice, it's not all rice. all commercial light lagers use some form of adjuncts (rice, corn, other sugars...) to lighten up the body/flavor profile. you'll have to just start trying the locals and see what you like...
welcome!!!

If a beer was made only from rice it would not be beer, it would be Sake.

Thanks everyone:
I'm not looking to brew my own beer. Actually I've been making my own wine for many years but because I've largely ceased consuming wine I don't plan to make any more. Its a time factor too.
Yes I was planning on trying several unfamiliar beers; I'm looking for something local so I'm not paying import prices.
This week there was a great article in the local Consumer magazine rating local beer so I will start with some of their suggestions.
I'll keep you posted!
