I started another batch sunday, and while cleaning my plastic fermenter out found that there was a powdery residue on the inside of the bucket.

prior to using it, I had sprayed it out after transferring the last batch, and then filled it with water/bleach solution to get out the odor, I let it sit for about a day(this was done the day before), then the morning of the brew day, I repeated to water/bleach soak for a number of hours.
I then rinsed it and left it to dry, then about 30min before putting the wort into the fermenter I went to give the fermenter a final clean. This is when I noticed the powdery residue, I cleaned it out by using a scrubbing dish pad very gently (I didn't want to scratch the bucket, but maybe it only takes a little pressure to scratch it?, I took the chance anyway)
Once I removed the residue I used some no rinse cleaner and let the bucket soak for 30mins before using.

Has anyone else ever seen this residue in their buckets?

I have not had this happen to me. I do know that bleach does leave a residue if not rinsed thoroughly. It should be rinsed with hot water. The heat will help disipate the bleach.

I sanitze with bleach/water and have never noticed this.

I wouldn't worry about it. :)

Is your water very hard?

It is a little on hard side, but the amount of residue didn't strike me as water stains, I could be wrong.... I rubbed my hand on the inside of the bucket and it came out with a light coat of powder on it

Croc...I, too, have experienced this phenomenon. I just rinsed it out good, didn't rip out my intestines over it, and went on with life. Everything turned out fine........don't worry about it. I cannot, however, tell you what it was. Hence, the more reason to spend $20 or so to get a glass carboy. I never saw the stuff again after switching to glass.:)

I've seen it too. Our water is hard so I've attributed it to precipitate caused by the cleaners. Not really sure though.

I do agree with Ray M that I haven't really seen it since switching to all glass. I can say that it never caused a problem when I was using a plastic fermenter.

While bottling me first batch last night, I noticed the same residue on the bottles after they had dried from being soaked in the no rinse sanitizer, so that must be the culprit for the resisdue.
I double checked my mixture water to sanitizer ratio and it was correct per the instuctions.
