Well, my girlfriend bought me a conical fermenter for my birthday. She enjoys my homebrew as much as I, and I think this will really make brewing a lot simpler and more fun. I just had a question for those of you out there with conicals. I know you funnel the sediment/trub off of the bottom instead of racking, but when exactly do you do this, and how often? Do you wait a week and then drain the trub? Do you drain your hot/cold break when it first settles? Do you just drain a little here and there as it accumulates? Also, when is the best time to harvest yeast to reuse?

Indeed she's a keeper. How many gallons does it hold? I would imagine you would release the bottom sediment as you would as if you were transferring into another carboy. I would say the initial yeast you would want to harvest would be with the first dump after initial fermentation. A conical would be sooooo sweet.

I DID marry my girlfriend... and so far as far as brewing's gone she's bought me:
a spare fridge
a thermostat for said fridge
a faucet to go in the door of said fridge
a wort chiller
an oxygen system
a kegging system complete with a co2 tank
4 or 5 great books.
and for father's day she got me hooked up with the head brewer of a local brewpub so I could help out during his brewday.
no conical yet, but i'm about to start working for my local brewshop on the weekends for store credit :-D
she's the coolest ever... and not just because she buys me brewing equipment.

Yeah, she's a keeper... I plan on marrying her (and not just because she buys me homebrew stuff)
She wants me to make her some mead though (or get her the equiptment to make her own) I'm thinking of getting her setup with the supplies to make mead for her birthday.
