View Full Version : Drinking from 97% pewter mug would this effect taste of beer?

I was given a decorative Imperial Pewter (97%) mug made and bought in Singapore. Is this a good mug to drink beer from? Would it effect the taste? Pewter in my dictionary says: an alloy of tin usu. with lead used esp. for kitchen or table utensils.

The one thing I don't like about mugs of any sort is I like to see the color of my beer especially when trying a new beer. Less of an issue with beer I'm familiar with.

You ought to be fine. Do a search for pewter here on the board - you'll find that Richard uses them on a regular basis.

Doing a search of Pewter has lead me to interesting threads of long ago. I found a thread that I started back when I first joined this site asking what was beer better in can or bottle. Great debate was made on that subject. Richard mentioned only drinking beer from a glass or pewter tankard. Tankard must be the English way of saying mug?

"tankard" is a large drinking vessel generally, but especially one that is made of pewter or stoneware and has a cover. Probably what Americans erroneously call a "stein".

Keep in mind that pewter comes in different alloys... some (especially antique and some foreign-sourced) has an inordinate amount of lead and should only be used for decoration. I'd recommend testing items before using them for consumption - inexpensive kits are available, google lead test kit.

One example (http://www.healthyhomeservices.ca/product.cfm?Room=Kitchen&ProductID=117)

That was one thing I was worried about. I'm not sure if mine was ment for decorative purpose or for drinking out of. I think I give it that test before further use.

Lead is real bad, man. I used to chew on the lead Christmas tree tinsel when I was a kid, and look what it did to me.

Seriously, though, lead is a real bad thing and, once ingested, doesn't leave the body, causing all kinds of nasty bad. Don't drink out of the mug. And I really did chew on the lead tinsel. Real hard on the mercury fillings.

I have got so use to drinking out of a glass. I bought a really cool ceramic beer mug on ebay about 1 year ago that I never use. I like to make notes on new beers I drink and observing its color is part of the observation. Another thing that got me thinking was all the debate about Bottle vs Can. I was always a person for purchasing beer in bottles and it seem ironic that would buy beer in bottles and then pour into metal cup. The only reason I guess I even thought about drinking beer from this pewter mug is it looked stylish.

Speaking of eatting stuff from the Christmas tree we had to stop putting tinsle on our tree because the cat would eat it. It would not digest in her system and she would have whole tinsle sticking out of her butt. You could not pull it out but just had to let it work itself out naturally.

One of my dogs ate 17 mini cheese cakes in decorative tin foil wrappings. It took him about 3 days to finally pass it all. It must have really hurt, because he would howl like a banshee every time he let some go.

On the other hand, it made for a festive yard.

We moved onto a busy street several years ago, Sam the dog escaped, got hit, and I had to put him down. Buried him in the back yard. Wife got a new dog, Ben. One day, Ben came in with a new chew toy, Sam's ear. Needless to say, when Wife asked what Ben had, I said, with a very wise-ass smile, "Sam's ear". She thought I was joking until she took it out of Ben's mouth...

We just got a new puppy last week. My wife says that my red neck is start to show through. Bought a Bluetick Coonhound and started making homebrew. She keeps checking my pockets for Skoal tins.

Drive fast...turn left...drive fast...turn left...repeat for 3 hours.

I want to see them try that in Detroit. You can't make a left turn anywhere!!

I think there is alittle redneck in us all. At our house I'm always yelling after someone uses the bathroom " Make sure you shake the handle" I've been meaning to get that fix but its just easier to shake the handle.

The toilet in my last house was still broken when I sold it(the house not the toilet). The new owner told me that he fixed it in about 10 minutes. I thought about trying to add up all of the time that it took me to shake the handle, and then seeing if it was longer than ten minutes...but I was too lazy to do that too.
