Hey there, 5 weeks ago I bought some specialty grains for an extract recipe and crushed them there at my LHBS and then decided to brew something else cause I couldn't get the right hops. So these grains have been sitting in a paper bag inside a ziplock at about 69 deg. F since then. I've read that you should use grains once they're crushed in 2 to 3 weeks. I was wondering what happens if you use old grains and whether 5 weeks was too long to have them sitting around. I munched on some and they tasted OK to me but I wanted to get some more info on this.

As long as they aren't rancid, Yeah I would use them.

Use 'em. I've brewed AG batches that have sat crushed longer than that.

I agree. As long as they're not damp or anything. I tend to taste some of each type of grain I put in my beer (call me odd, I actually like it, apart from the husk). It gives me a better appreciation of the individual component flavours of the final beer. If they taste alright, they'll work ok.
