Can one use bottles such as what Sierra Nevada Pale Ale comes
in. They have twist off caps with those little threads at the top.
Will those threads prevent a regular cap from sealing??

Yes, they will. You're going to need to find regular top bottles that you have to pry off. Sorry to burst your bubble.

the twist-off bottles are usually much thinner, also, which may cause them to break while conditioning if the cap does seal. The thinner glass is what makes them cheaper for the brewery

So I guess you mostly recommend getting bottles from the local homebrew
store??

Buy good beer in good bottles.
This way you get to drink good beer, and don't have to pay for empty bottles.

Find a local microbrew or brewpup that bottles their beer. Check to see if they have any specials on bottled cases. You get a case of bottles and a decent beer to boot. A case of new bottles is usually $9-10, I'd rather pay more and get beer in them!
A local brewery near me had bottles of their brown ale $20 a case, I bought two cases, it made a good back up beer and something to bust out when the guys were over.

Like everyone else who started this hobby, you have a lot of beer to drink. Get movin'
You should also try to find other homebrewers with too many bottles. If someone recently moved to kegging, I'm sure they have some bottles to unload. You might have to offer to send a couple of their bottles back full of your homebrew, but you also get an experienced brewer to taste and comment on your beer.

If you have a bartender friend that works at a bar that serves good beer in bottles, you could ask him or her to save them for you.
That is how I got all of my bottles. I'm a bartender, and there is no way I'm paying money for bottles when I'm tossing a case or two worth of good brown bottles out in the course of an evening.

Good point. I almost forgot, but for my first batch, I was short on bottles getting close to bottling day. I went to a bar on an off night and told the bartender I was looking for bottles. I tipped him well and went home with 18 empty bottles.

You can always check local fea markets. I have several flip top bottles that I got for $1 a piece. I have also heard of people going to liquor stores and paying the bottle deposit and just never bringing the bottles back.
