I just had a bottle last night. After some serious effort to obtain it, I managed three bottles.
Oh, sweet hop bliss.....

You managed 3 bottles? And what time did you stroll into work today?

I think 120 is a unique beer. I like it but know plenty of folks who don't. Perhaps we should do a poll.
I've been looking. Haven't found one yet.
I like the 90, but Sherwin Williams was out of that last time I stopped in, too. (And while I like it....$8 for 4 bottles? Not going there often...)

it is usually kind hard to find...if your not on top of the release dates from the brewery, you'll likely miss out

All the Sam Smith beers are $10 for 4 bottles, here. I buy the India Ale semi-regularly.

Only $2 per beer for a Double IPA that takes more malt, more hops, more time for the hopping, etc. A fair price to pay for such a beer if you enjoy it. 48 oz. of beer...nearly two bottles of wine. Tell me where you can get 2 bottles of comparable quality wine for that price (besides clearance)?
Cheers!

Easy there. :)
I didn't say/feel I was being ripped off. For me, that's just more of a "somewhat special occasion" price and strength.

Wine does have a higher abv. More fermentables cost more, so the difference is worthy. Always compare based on "standard" serving sizes. With beer, you can argue over the 12 or 16 oz serving size, but the law says 12. Wine should always be a 5 oz serving. Distilled spirits being 1 oz.

Compare what you'd like. I won't quibble over 2-3% abv, give or take. Good craft beer is an incredible value. Guess I'm a bit sick of cashiers looking puzzled when I purchase a $8-12 bottle of beer, yet they don't blink at a $20+ bottle of wine. Same with the beer lovers who balk at $8 for a sixer of beer. Many don't think twice about dropping $25-30 at the sports bar for some pints with buddies. But spend $8-10 on the same beer to take home. God no..it's too expensive!
Teej, I understand where you're coming from. I love a bargain and have to spend my beer $$ wisely nowadays, too. Just a sore subject with me.
Cheers!

When my assistant brewer and I tried the 120 for the first time, we had heard all the hype and were still not prepared for this beer. What an experience! We looked at each other and said "They DID it!!" WOW! It IS a hop monster, but the malt backbone is still strong enough to balance it!
I hope to brew one like this soon!
Btw, the hops they use are Warrior, Simcoe, and Amarillo, right?

There is a clone recipe in the current Nov/Dec Zymurgy mag. I really don't feel like typing it all out so if someone knows how to find it online go ahead. If not I will type it out for you this weekend.

Just wondering if it is truly all malt. 21% ??? It's tough. I still have some from 3 years ago and they are aging interestingly.

Here is the recipe according to Zymurgy.
5 U.S. Gallons
16 lb Pilsner Malt
.5 lb English Amber Malt 35L
11 lb Dextrose Sugar (added during fermentation)
1.38 oz Amarillo pellet hops, 10% alpha acid (continuous hopping) (30.8 IBU)
1.38 oz Simcoe pellet hops, 13% alpha acid (continuous hopping) (40 IBU)
1.38 oz Warrior pellet hops, 16% alpha acid (continuous hopping) (49.2 IBU)
Mix the hops in a container and add about .1 oz of the mixture every 3 minutes.
1.0 oz Amarillo pellet hops, 10% alpha acid (daily dry hopping)
1.0 oz Simcoe pellet hops, 13% alpha acid (daily dry hopping)
1.0 oz Warrior pellet hops, 16% alpha acid (daily dry hopping)
Mix the hops in a container and add about 0.2 oz of the mixture to the fermenter every day.
White Labs WLP001 California Ale or Wyeast 1056 American Ale yeast for initial fermentation. For the following fermentation use White Labs WLP099 Super High Gravity Ale.
Target Original Gravity 1.092 (22 Plato)
Approximate Final Gravity 1.042 (10.48 Plato after sugar additions)
Enjoy!

I just bought my beer store's last bottle of the 2003 for $8. I"m kind of regretting it now thinking of all the other good stuff I could have got for that $8 but I'm sure I wont regret it when I'm drinking it. Anybody notice any differences between the different vintages? I had a bottle a year or 2 ago and I thought it needed to age a while so I grabbed the 2003 instead of the 2004.

I found it to be cloyingly sweet. Too much sugar. The hops actctally took a backseat to the sweetness, which made it pretty low on my Hopmeter.
The most amazing thing about this beer was how well the alcohol was masked. Brilliant.
But taste? Id rather have a 90min. Its way hoppier.

I agree with Hpster. 60 is good, 90 is okay, 120 is over the top. I barely get hop flavor and aroma in that beer at all. Just a lot of bitterness, alcohol and sweetness. Blech!

$6.99 a bottle in baltimore
I picked one up last night. Drinking it now.
I expected more hop flavor. A lot more.
I'm drinking it "cool", but not "cold".
Alcohol and hops seem to cancel each other out, leaving a barleywine flavor with a hoppy aroma.
As it warms up a bit, the alcohol seems to beat down the hop flavor a bit .

If you're looking for a extreme IPA with lots of hop flavor I recommend Founder's Devil Dancer triple IPA. It's 13% and has a nice hop flavor balanced by the malty sweetness. And it only costs around $13 for a 4 pack compared to $8 a bottle.

I thought the DD was great. Definitely one of the hoppiest beers I've had but I thought it was pretty well balanced with the sweetness and alcohol. I just got some Hop Wallop which I remember thinking was the hoppiest beer I'd ever tasted last year so I'll have to compare the two.

I just had the Hop Wallop for the first time a couple weeks ago (a restaurant in town is actually carrying it on tap). Whoa, a great beer.
As far as the Dogfish Head 90 versus 120 discussion, I prefer the 90 Minute Ale. I can't say enough about the 60 Minute Ale, too. Another fine, fine beer.

Picked up a 4 pack of the 90 last night. Payed $10.99 for it. Kind of pricey, but I plan to save it for New Years Eve. I would like to try to get a bottle or 2 of the 120, just for comparison. My local store was out, but I haven't exhausted all of my resources yet.

For New Years Eve, I tried the 90 minute and the 120 minute. I have to say, I preferred the 90 minute. I found that the 120 was too sweet, and the alcohol taste really came through. I bought 2 bottles at $9.99 per, and I plan on putting one of them up until next New Years Eve, just to see if there is a difference after aging it.
The 90 minute was a HUGE hit, even with people who normally drink swill. It was a bit pricey for an "all the time brew", but I can see getting some for special occasions.
Anyway, that's just my opinion.

I just happened to hear some good things about Dogfish and decided to try it after being a Miller Lite/Yeungling drinker. Thats what sparked my interest and brought me here. I just got their book, but haven't read it yet.
At the restaurant here in DE, they charge $10 for a bottle of 120. Of course, I didn't know this until the bill came. I went looking for it at the local liquor stores, and it's about $7.99 everywhere. The 120 is an awesome brew that is surprisingly good for as strong as it is. My favorite so far is their 90 because it just seems to be balanced better than their 60.
I also enjoy their WWS and recently tried their Old School Barleywine which was amazing. I've left the restaurant on several occasions after drinking 3 beers and maybe some of the sampler feeling pretty darn good! Surprising thing is that I feel good the next day. Must be the quality ingredients. ;)

Actually, their beer is unfiltered, and cotains yeast. Those beers provide far less hangover potential

I'm down most weekends too. My beach place is in Ocean City. I keep a kegerator there with two sixtel on usually. The last sixtel I got from DFH was the Raison de Etra and it only cost $30.00 + $10.00 deposit at the brewery.

At least I started with at New Castle after being a Bud Girl for years.

I've yet to try New Castle yet, but I'd like too! I haven't tried a whole lot of serious beers yet, but I did pick up the Sam Adams Winter Variety pack and enjoyed all the beers except for the cranberry beer. I also got a "Seriously Bad Elf" for xmas and loved it. I went back for more, but they were all sold out. I did drink alot of the Dogfish Pumkin Ale around Thanksgiving too. Thats pretty good stuff.
Other than that, I've got an older bottle of Dogfish Festina Lente at home waiting for a special occasion, and a bottle of Sam's Chocolate Stout waiting for the same. The big conflict is that these beers don't mesh too well with my low carb diet, so I'm spacing them out a bit. :D
Thanks again for the warm welcome!

I also seen that you had a stout waiting for you. Have you tried other stouts? I have to say that I am a stout woman big time. I personaily like the OLD RASPUTIN RUSSIAN IMPERIAL STOUT....mmm. Also, I like the Dominion oak Barrel Stout..another favorite.

Have you tried the Stone Imperial (Russian) Stout? It is my favorite IRS so far, although from what people say FFF Dark Lord may unseat it from that position assuming I can ever get my hands on a bottle. It is seasonal, and comes out in the middle of the summer, but if you have a chance to snag a bomber, do so.

-Don't be surprised if the Festina Lente is near flat. DFH admitted a problem with the bottling of it years ago and even with Sam's warm storage recommendation, none of my bottles have had more than a whisper of carbonation. Still a tasty beer. More like a tart, still peach wine.

Doh! I did mean Chocolate Bock.
Thanks for the heads up on the Festina. When I bought it, it was in the cooler set at 48 degrees. It's in my refrigerator at home, so I'll have to drink it quick!
I'm dying to get down to DFH and try two of thier new releases, Mandagascar Vanilla Bean Porter, and Burton Baton. They both sound like beers that I'll take a liking to. We went down last weekend but we found DFH closed for rennovations. We ended up at Nicola's Pizza and the best they had was Yuengling. It worked, but we stopped at the lq store on the way home and picked up a couple WWS's, and a six of SN Celebration. The WWS really gives you a kick in the pants after drinking a whole bottle! I really didn't care for the Celebration too much. It seemed to be unbalanced and a bit too much hoppy in my opinion. But I'm a new-b and I've read plenty of reviews praising it. I can't say too much though because about half way through my second, I passed out on the couch. I heard plenty the next day about how loud I was snoring and so on and so forth. I'd like to think it was just that I got up early to go hunting, not all the beer I drank! :D

Drink whenever. It isn't getting any flatter or more carbonated in your fridge. DFH recognized the problem and recommended a potential solution - warm storage to help carbonate (say, above 70 degrees). Didn't help with my bottles. So, no rush. Still a tasty beer.

I still have a case of 12 750 ml bottles from the original first batch of DFH 120 Min IPA. I paid $20 for each bottle when it came out a few years ago. To me, it tasted like someone put a shot of grain alcohol in a double IPA.
As for a clone recipe, I worked out one on my own, long before Zymurgy published their recipe. Here it is, for those who want it. This beer was made in stages. I did the grain first, got that fermenting, then added the LME at day 3, & the DME at day 5.
It took 3 weeks for primary, 6 months in secondary. Note: I used 1 gallon of slurry, not a 1 gallon starter.
The table sugar was added to the boil.
It might not be an exact replica, but it's close enough to not be able to tell the difference side by side with the real deal.
Hope you guys like it as much as I do.

I would have to agree with everyone that says the 120 is not hoppy. I dont find that it is over the top with hops....just dont see it. I have to say that the 120 is my favorite. I mean the 60, 90 and the 120 all have different taste. They are all good in their right.
The World Wide Stout....now that is what I am talking about. MMMM. Thats the way to go....I would take the stout over any of the ones listed above.....(ok it would be a toss up between the 120 and the stout. Depends on my mood);)

Found a great store in Jersey that has plenty of 120 from 03, 04, 05 and the World Wide Stout in several vintages also. A few years worth of JW Lees in all their various forms, Hardy's vintage etc., etc. I was tripping over cases of Rodenbach Grand Cru and their Flemish sour ale. They had at least a dozen SA Utopias in the case. I had to get out of there. Everytime I went to the register, I ended up doing a 180 and taking another stroll around and throwing another bottle or two in the cart.

You're right, the 60 has a much more in your face, drier hop flavor and aroma and the 90 is very balanced with the sweet maltiness. When I had the 120 a couple years ago I said this beer needs to age for a few years. It was way too sweet and syrupy that totally overpowered any hop flavor. I have a bottle of 2003 that I'm waiting for a while to open but I expect it to have mellowed out a bit by that time.
