How long has it been in the bottle? And how warm did you store it while it was carbonating? Cold storage can make it hard for carbonation for form. Also, you want to make sure that there's no soap residue on the inside of your glass - this will help a lot.

Gentlemen, do I have your permission to post it again?

Check your glassware. Dirty glassware can kill head retention as fast as the cop knocking on the car window.
Thank you and good night.

If you run your glassware through a dish washer then the rinsing agent that coats the glass so that you don't get spots kills head retention. Or it is possible that you didn't get the priming sugar mixed up enough and some bottles got less priming sugar.

it was probably the priming sugar
it appears that some of the beer is
less carbonated than others
so yeah
i think thats it
but other than that it tastes great

I have this result with a Anchor Steam clone. It has been bottled for only 2.5 weeks and the basement is under 60. I am hoping that it will get better in a couple weeks. Came out really good though.

dirt1016: You may want to worm it up for a cople of weeks. 2 weeks @ room temp is a good rule of thumb.

Just a side note; althought I would agree that (this being your first brew and I assum an extract beer) it is most likely low carbonation or dirty glass, another thing that can make a problem for head retention and formation is protiens. This isn't normaly a problem for extract brewers but depending on the extract (some have more than others) it can make a diforence. One thing that you can do to help with this is make sure that you bring your wort up to boil quikly and that it is a good rolling boil (this is called the "hot brake.") Then cool your wort (after the boil) as quikly as possible (this is called "cold brake".) These two things will help in the formation of "trube" (sorry my spelling isn't any good and it may not have a "e" at the end =) Trube is geliten like chunks of protiens. As I said this isn't much of an issue with extract but there have been times that I got quit a bit of trube from an extract.
Another thing, if you are big on head...and who isn't? If you use some malted wheat or flaked barly (flaked anything realy) in your spectialty grains it will help your head formation.
