Well I've waited long enough to really get into beer so I decided to get involved in some kind of beer related topics. I've been collecting full bottles since 1987 and tasting and loving just slightly before that. Anyways, here I am, I'll try to be active and give some time to beer, other then drinking it. Although drinking will always come first.
Cheers!

Just out of curiosity, what interesting things have you collected thus far? Do you collect for display only, or do you collect with the intent of tasting eventually, i.e. cellaring beer?

I collect mostly for display, I like to collect for the bottles, labels, and for the beer itself. The older the label, bottle, and perhaps no longer made the beer is, the more its worth to me. Maybe another collector would be interested in trades or whatever but I've never really considered it or been offered.
I only have about six or seven on lay away for later. But it's hard for them to ever last more than a year. I only have some that are really old in my collection and question whether or not they'd be any good?
Young's Old Nick Barleywine '93, Sam Adams Tripple Bock91' and a Guiness Stout 88' and a handful of Belgium whites that could be considered. But I don't know much about the longivity of these and others? Maybe someone out there would like to give me some helpful hints.

All the bottles in my collection that are on display(3,200+) are empty, because most beers go bad and I love to try new stuff. I've tried just over 4,000 (all logged) so far. I do have about 350 different "vintage" beers cellaring at this time, and my only advice is, the bigger the beer(alc.%), the better your chances for enjoying it at a later date. I've been into this little hobby for 14 years and have been to 17 different festivals and 117 different breweries/brewpubs. I only wish I had started cellaring beers much earlier. Keep on collecting...it's a blast. Talk to you later.

Hey rabidbeerjunkie, beer advocate indeed.
My god man, thats impressive!
My full collection sits at 400 with about 20 empty.
Your cellar collection sounds awesome, its as big as my
regular collection.
I've tried around 700 different beers, no where near your
astonishing palette has.
I'll keep at it though.
Someday I can say that I've had 4,000 different beers.
I, now, have a goal, and a long term one at that.
Big Cheers to you!!

Thanks for the kudos, tavernjef! Although I'm not opposed to a bit of shameless self-promotion, it's definitely all about the beer, not me. Your collection sounds very cool. I have to admit a little bit of jealousy, though, as I think full bottles do look awesome on display. Anybody who enjoys good beer, and especially is a collector, is good people in my book. It's guys like us that keep 'em making more. Besides, it's fun. I just recently started the arduous task of transferring my entire hand-written log over to the computer...so, maybe it's not always fun...typing is not my forte. Talk to you later.

Ya, I know what'cha mean rabidbeerjunkie,
I took the time to even put them in by country,
and am currently alphabetizing the names in
each country, yikes, what's wrong with me.
I do it while sipping on something.
I still have my hand written one just as a keepsake.
Cheers:)

Hey BeerSponge,
Sorry, man, that's not my web site. Don't have one, actually. I'm just "a" beer advocate, not "the" beer advocate. Thanks for the kind words, anyway. Hope to run in to you on the boards again.
Prost!

Hey there Beersponge,
No I haven't noticed that St. pauli Girl, if thats what your refering to, has changed the label. If so, that's all good; that just means the one I have form 1989 is more valuable and a keeper.
My favorite is the Samual Adams labels, they've changed alot in the last few years. I have some of the original labels from some of the first years brews and its funny to see how much its become mainstream and hip looking. He went from looking like George Washington on the one dollar bill, very posed and sturdy, to this relaxed looking patriot who could be your nieghbor with a gray wig. Some labels from this year don't even have the illustration, just the name, "Samual Adams Summer, Samual Adams Winter, just to remember a few. And of course the sell out Sam Adams light has no illustration either, what...everrr...
