View Full Version : Why does Vegas have no good beer?

Seriously? Disneyworld for adults? I don't think so. The only thing any of those places carry are the mega's and I get sick of drinking Amstel after my first few. Why do people put up with the lack of options as these money pits (aka casinos)?

I thougt Vegas had a couple Brew Pubs? And they also have one of the few officially sanctioned Hofbrauhauses outside of Munich.

They also have a gordon biersch, but if you're sitting at the tables, you can't order anything other than a macro in most casinos.

Ahh. That would be bad. Some friends once told me of a little casino with an Irish slant that served Guinness to gamblers, not sure if it's still around.

Here's a spot for Saaz: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/2308/

Seems to get good reviews.

List of a few brewpubs/breweries/beer bars. There is some good beer - gotta look. The beer list at the Freaking Frog looks impressive.

Vegas, baby! (http://beeradvocate.com/beerfly/list?path=%2Fbeerfly%2Flist&sort=name&show=search&name=&city=las+vegas&s_id=NV&c_id=&zip=&area=&submit=+search+&brewery=Y&brewpub=Y&bar=Y)

If you're gambling at the Monte Carlo, you can get one of their brewery's beers at the tables. Some people kinda rip on the beers a bit, but I've never had a problem with them. Beats anything else they serve there, hands down.

As in many things in life you must make a choice... I know the Hofbräuhaus has excellent beer, you just have to give up fancy gambling.

A very good friend of mine is brewing in Vegas so I know they have some good beer. The problem with getting some of those beers in to the casino is the gaming laws. We had a similar problem here in KC at the old Station Casino, now Ameristar, where my buddy Mike had the run of all the taps (68bbl Liquid Assets system) which was both boats and IIRC 14 restaurants.

Then the MGC stepped in and told them they had to have a distributor if they wanted to serve their beers as the brewery is considered a seperate entity. Things get VERY strange when dealing with a casino. I dealt dice and poker at Harrah's for 3 years before learning that I hated people.

Vegas has several good brewpubs and a Hofbrau Haus. But the big casinos usually will have Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Sam Adams and or Guinness.

exactly - notice that bars/pubs with good beer aren't appealing to the masses.

I'm off to Lost Wages in March. I've perused the BA listings and it seems like there's drinkable beer, though nothing earthshattering.

Anybody from here have some first hand experience with the brew in Sin City?

How about with the $200 Buy in NL tables?

I just returned from there. I visited the Sin City pub in the Aladdin Desert Passage shopping area. I was astounded by how good the Stout was. Although it was a little on the cold side. The brewer was there. he uses Gordon Biersch facilities to brew and he knows our (DC) GB well as he helped build it. He has four beers on An Octoberfest which is really more of a Vienna style, A Bavarian Hefe using yeast from Weinstephan. (sp), a Golden Lager which I did not try and the stout that I was not going to try until he convinced me to have a sample. It was very good.

I also managed to hit Monte Carlo's brew pub and Triple 7 up in the old Downtown. It is located in the Main Street Station Casino.

I had been to both of them before and they make decent brews. Not spectacular but good.

I also returned to the Hofbrau Haus and enjoyed a few liters.

Taneya Creek, Big Dog and Chicago are all off the strip and a bit of a cab ride I'm told. So I have been to none of them nor the Gordon Biersh yet.

Avoid Ellis Island. I am told it is seedy and the beers are like macro swill. They are only $1.00 for an imperial pint though. I have never been inside this place because by virtually all reviews I have read, it is no good.

Where are you staying?

Stodbrew

That's good to hear that the Sin City beers are good, as I will be staying in the Aladdin tomorrow and Saturday. Gonna have to hit up the Hofbrauhaus for a few liters, too.

The Sin City pub is really just a small counter to serve as a more visable way to publicize their beers. I really liked the Stout. The brewer is Richard Johnson. Ask the guy at the counter if he is Richard. Also tell them that you read about his place here on Realbeer.com. I was telling him I would write something here. I was just there last Saturday so he should remember talking with me. Meridian, If you get by there, you should mention Realbeer.com too.

There is a chance I will be back in LV in March as well. Most likely sometime between the 11-19th. Unless we go to Germany or England that week. My son is on Spring Break and he wants to take a trip.

Nice casino. Cool pool area. And neat aquarium. But it is at the far end of the strip from where I usually stay. A company that I am affiliated with has a suite there.

FWIW I didn't get out as much as I'd hoped, though I was part of a large bachelor party weekend so that's not a surprise. The good news is New Belgium product was everywhere. Fat Tire was the biggie but I also had their Wit style wheat beer which was very tasty and refreshing. IIRC I had Fat Tire at Mandalay Bay, Belagio, MGM Grand, etc. I played some poker and couldn't get a FT at the tale but was able to get Sierra Nevada, which was sweet. Man I remember the days of Bud or Heineken being the only offer. Makes me shiver just thinking about it. I was down way off the Strip at some of the low rent sawdust joints and even a few of them had at least Sierra on offer.

Made it to the Hofbrauhaus LV, which I have to say was excellent. Had the Dunkel, which though not my favorite Munich dark, was very tasty. It's really hard to find the style in the States. They had an unfiltered lager as their season special which was also tasty. Didn't bother with the Weizen or Helles but I'm sure they were good. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) the crew I was with got a bit into the gemutlichkeit of the place and we didn't bother eating save some pretzels. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

For those flying in and out of McCarren there's a Gordon Biersch tap in the D terminal near gate 8.

I usually find Sierra Nevada is pretty standard in the casinos. A few might even carry some of the Sin City brews. Glad to hear that New Belgium beers are becomming an option. I usually just request the SNPA.

I've been to the HB Haus a few times now and I really like that place. The beers are very good there.

On poker I was pumped up $400, pissed a good part of it away on craps and roulette (just being social I usually never play either really). I was pretty free with the rounds of drinks I bought when out and about. In the end I did ok.

I love the $200 NL tables (2/4 blinds at Mandalay, 2/5 at Bellagio).

It's going to take me a month to recover from this trip.

chaz - I'll just reiterate what I found last year when I was out there with my Agency's conference.

I spent some part of each night at the Star Trek Bar in the Hilton - all the beers, although some are dyed several colours, are craft beers by other names. Supposedly the GB makes most.

Once you get past the crazy atomosphere, it was quite enjoyable.

also, the Irish Restaurant at the NY, NY was highly praised by most of my agency folks that went there for a night.

Thanks! I used to go to Las Vegas 4 or 5 times a year but that has dwindled to an annual trip in January to watch the playoffs with some buddies and business associates. I've been to most of the close by local brewpubs and even the long closed Holy Cow. But I have avoided Ellis Island because it always, always gets bad reviews. My favorite beer place in LV is the Hofbrau Haus.

I was last in Vegas this past August.

On this most recent trip, we discovered the Tilted Kilt at the Rio. While the "Hooters in Scotland" theme was a bit much (for me anyway, maybe not the men in the group!), they had some very cool taps including Dead Guy and Arrogant Bastard. A good pubfood-style menu, too - definitely one of our favorite watering holes that trip, despite the Catholic Schoolgirl Gone Braveheart Porn staff that had me rolling my eyes every 5 minutes. :) Heh. Visit the website and you'll see what I mean.

http://www.tiltedkiltnv.com/index.html

We also always try to hit Bouchon in the Venetian Towers at the Venetian hotel. It takes like 30 minutes to get there from the front door (that place is freakin' huge) but they serve Chimay on tap (and in the right glassware). If you go in the early-to-mid afternoon, it's empty, you can sit right at the bar, and order THE BEST POMMES FRITES IN THE WORLD to munch on while having your Chimay. The Blue one, I think.

http://www.bouchonbistro.com/bouchonLV/bouchonLV.htm

http://www.venetian.com/dining/bouchon.cfm

As reviewed previously, the Monte Carlo brew is not bad - when we stayed there in 2005 we bought the "refillable" mugs and started each day with a breakfast stout :-) Did not visit this last time in August 2006 because we wanted to try to explore new places.

Also tried the Triple 7 Brew Pub at the Main Street Station and Chicago Brewing out in the boonies. Triple 7 had a good pale if I remmember correctly. We definitely drank enough to feel pretty mellow on our bus ride back to our hotel! Chicago Brewing had a great brewpub atmosphere and the sampler was satisfying, but it is a bit of a drive off the strip.

http://www.chicagobrewingcolv.com/

Quark's Bar and Restaurant (the "Star Trek" lounge in the Hilton) serves GB brews with Trekkie names, and you can enter the lounge without paying for the Star Trek Experience (although if you are a fan, it's good fun).

http://www.startrekexp.com/

We visited the Hofbrauhouse the visit before and it was good fun - I'm not a huge German beer fan but the quality and the atmosphere made for a good time.

http://www.hofbrauhauslasvegas.com/

Most casino bars will have at least Guinness. Last time we were at the NY, NY (2005) we went to the Bar at Times Square. I think the best thing on tap was Bass, but the dueling piano show is awesome.

http://www.nynyhotelcasino.com/entertainment/entertainment_barattimessquare.aspx

But overall, still not a beer drinkers' town.

Thanks for the tip on Bouchon. I always spend a lot of time in the Venetian and sometimes stay there. They have the best sports book and the tables have enough room to spread out a bit while gaming. They are not all crammed up against each other like some of the other casinos.
I'm finding that more and more places are carrying the Sin City brews and you can usually find Guinness or Sierra Nevada PA on the floors. At the very least Sam Adams.

I was in Vegas in October for the first time and found it very exciting and overwhelming at the same time, but I do have to say i am hooked and cannot wait to get back!!

We were soo excited to be able to drink Coors Original (our fav) as where I am from (Canada) they only sell Coors Light. We had bought a few Original from the convenience stores in the hotel were we where staying at (TI) and found they all tasted slewey! So we went back to the Light stuff, well we had went to the show Mystere, and found that they sold beer in a bucket (Coors Light), so we ordered that and I couldn't believe that they were PLASTIC bottles I just think that is the most smartest thing!! We even saved some and brought them home with us.(Full to enjoy around a camp fire sometime!:D )

Anyway thanks for all the links there, Jinja! I have checked tham out and want to try to get to the Chicago Brewwing Co. and the Brauhaus one!! The Bouchon looks really nice but, a little too fancy shmancy for me!!

Mystere was my first Cirque de Soliel, and I went into it thinking it was supposed to have a story line, I quickly found out it doesn't. I kept thinking this has got to be someones interpretation of a bad acid trip!!:D

The only other Cirque show I'd see will be The Beatles cause I love the Beatles, but other than that one I won't waste my $$!
I would rather go to a magic show. We seen Dirk Arthur when we went and I thought it was really good, although it was my first magic show!!

The GF is in Vega$ as we speak. Staying in the Embassy Suites near UNLV - is that the one that is so close to HofbrauHaus? Anything else she should hit, beer-wise, while she's there? She's not the hophead that most of you are... likes good malty reds and ambers. :)

The closest to Hofbrau Haus is Hard Rock. It is across the street diagonally from it. I like several of the brewpubs in LV but I REALLY like the HBH. If she gets up to old towne tell her to try Main Street Station. Monte Carlo on the strip has a brewpub. There is a Sin City outlet in the shoppes at the Aladdin. Gordon Biersh is in town but tell her NOT to go to Ellis Island.

Coincidentally I'm selling a Monte Carlo Tee Shirt on Ebay right now. I think I have about 25 different beer shirts on right now.

I know Sin City uses the GB Brewery to brew their beer too. The owner / brewer has worked closely with Gordon Biersch and I think was previously employed by them. He told me that he helped build the DC Gordon Biersch.

However, I’d still recommend Hofbrau Haus. It is cheesy touristy but the food is good and the beer GREAT.

Carol was there last night to watch UF/OSU. Even asked for one of their own beers. Bartender said they're not doing that anymore and offered no explanation.

She had a Sin City Stout, which she said was passable, and a Fat Tire with her pizza which always tastes just like Fat Tire. But there was nothing there for her to drink in the way of house-brewed beer last night. Maybe this is a very new development...?

The Draft House makes great beers. So do some of the Chicago's. Teyana Creek is out of the way but a good brew pub also.

A great Happy Hour is at a restaurant called Rosemary's on Sahara in a strip mall (about 5 miles from the strip). At Happy Hour they have 1/2 priced beers and a great Belgian selection. Imagine Rochefort 10 for $4.00 :)

Hofbrauhaus is touristy but decent.

The Burger Bar at Mandalay Bay has a pretty good line up with about 30 beers on tap. Also, really awesome burgers.

Pick up a copy of Southwest Brewing News or Celebrator for up to date information.

Ellis Island has been roundly panned by most real craft brew lovers. I have passed it many times but have never gone in. I have read only poor reviews on sites that I respect. So I'll not risk disappointment. I did read one review that said the beer was cheap and they had cheap steaks there but that the whole place was a little seedy.

I know of only one other current brewpub that has only had poor reviews by the craft brew community and I have not visited that place either.

Ellis Island is the "dive bar" of brewpubs I have been to. And that makes it different and wonderful!!!

I stayed at Bally's last time I was there, which is right in front of Ellis Island. As soon as me and 12 other guys (bachelor party) got off the plane, we were starving and thirsty. We went to EI and it was like heaven.

They had 5 beers on tap, all of them delicious. I loved their hefe. They gave me a sample rack of all 5 (4 ouncers) for free. 20oz pints were indeed, $1. The food was cheap but fantastic. I had one of the best meatball hoagies ever. One of the guys had a HUGE prime rib and 2 sides for like $9.99 and loved it. Had to be a pound of beef.

The atmosphere is seedy. But charming. If it were on Freemont Ave, no one would bat an eyelash, but it seems dingy so close to the Strip. As far as the macro rep, the brewmaster is a retired Coors man. I'm the first to bash B/M/C but these beers were well made and delicious.

We mostly played in Bally's and they had a small bar in the casino that was our rendez-vous place. Had Alaskan Amber and Pyramid Hefe on tap for $5/pint. Our strategy was to sit down and slip a $5 into the video poker machine. As soon as you did that, they would come over and comp you a beer. If you lost, no biggie - you paid for your beer. If you won - bonus! Good beer plus winnings!

Thanks! I saw Ellis Island as I came in (I'm at the Flamingo), so I think it's close. I will try it. I just hope it's not too seedy because I am here alone for this conference so I'll have to go alone. However, generally I am the seedy type, so I think it will be fine.

Well, I am also on the shy side... ;)

We should have at least described ourselves to each other. I hated to ask every guy there if he were Steve.

Anyway, I went to Ellis Island tonight, and I loved it! I'd say on a seedy scale of 1-10...with 1 being Ceasar's Palace and 10 being a rat infested, sleasy hotel...this was probably a 5. The area was seedy maybe, but the place wasn't that bad. And the beer! I had a great amber (an ale) that was quite good. Guess how much it was? $1.00!!!! I have never had a beer that cheap in my life! Then I had their barbecue for dinner; that was an excellent half slab of ribs that would rival any from the barbecue centers of the nation. All the sides were included, like cole slaw, baked beans, bread, corn on the cob, etc. Guess what that bill was, including a very nice tip? $10.21!!!!

Is it always so cheap in Las Vegas?

Some of the people, I admit, were a little seedy, but a great guy, who loves beer, sat next to me and we had a nice talk. There is only 1 beer he doesn't like...Foster's. He even likes Bud! Oh well.

All in all, it was a great time. I will go to the HOFBRÄUHAUS.

Thanks!

Hofbrau Haus is my fav in LV. It is across the street from Hard Rock. Not really easy walking distance from the Flamingo. In the shoppes at Aladdin there is an outlet for Sin City. He brews his beers at the local Gordon Biersch. In old town Main Street Station has some decent brews. I've always avoided Ellis Island based on the fact that I've never read a good review anywhere. I'm glad to hear it has redeaming value. I'll check it out next trip. Kalleh, The food at Rosewood Grille is excellent - the oysters and lobster especially. I always make it a point to dine there. LV has some great places to eat. Surprisingly there is a nice place called Michaels in the Barbary Coast next to the Flamingo. And the best steak house is also in a dumpy old hotel. The Steakhouse at Circus Circus.

Wish I would've seen this earlier. Yeah, Ellis Island is cheap, and the beers are ok. Another brewery that wouldn't be too tough to get to from the Strip is Triple 7 up at Main Street Station. It's a cab ride (or The Deuce) to Fremont Street, but their beers are usually pretty good. Great garlic fries, too. I still always suggest The Draft House, though it's a good 20 minutes from The Strip, up near where I live.

Had you been here a week later, I would've definitely suggested the Draft House, as the "tapping party" for their Barleywine was this past Thursday.

Two words: Freakin' Frogs.

They currently carry over 700 beers, they also have a members only whiskey attic with one of the largest selections of whiskey in the world. The staff are awesome, very knowledgeable and passionate about beer. All around it's hands down the best beer bar in Las Vegas. If you haven't been, stop reading this and go there now.(assuming that you live in Las Vegas, of course).

Website? Location? Is it near the Strip for us tourists?

700 beers? Heck...it might be the best in the nation! I want to come back.

Stan was going to visit the Freakin' in LV during a trip a few weeks ago, he opted for the Hofbrauhaus instead -- telling? Dunno. But how many of the "700" beers are Bud, Bud Light, Bud Dry Ice, Bud Red, Busch, Busch Light, Michelob, Michelob Ultra... you see where I'm going, and I haven't even gotten to MC.

Here's their web site: http://www.freakinfrog.com/

The beer list has some good stuff on it, but I wasn't far off with the Michelob, Miller, Molsen, thought -- Colt 45?

Hmm, the proximity of the place to UNLV is kind of ominous too.

Looks like somebody already posted the website, so I won't do that. I thought about doing it though.

Yes, Chaz, I was at the Brickskeller, on your suggestion, and it's awesome. I believe I still have their menu. [I kinda thought my response would elicit a comment from you!]

;)

I'm headed to a tasting there next Wednesday. Many brewers from our region will be bringing their winter brews for sampling. My son will be attending as well. This will be his official first Brickskeller tasting.

Freakin' Frog is where the local homebrew club has their meetings. I have yet to make it to one, they are always on a Friday when I have other plans.
