View Full Version : reconditioning a corny

I got a few cornies from a board member who claimed they were cleaned and had new rings.

they smell like 7up to me so I don't trust that they've been fully cleaned. The small amount of liquid in them isn't really sticky but the ring is a bit clingy when removing the lid

what's the process for reconditioning/cleaning a used corny? what chems or cleaners should I use? and should I replace the rings again?

thanks!

For cleaning I have always have used a solution of TSP and water. Never use bleach on stainless. At least that is the info I have. As for the rings, I guess as long as they seal well they're fine to use.

I just use the same cleaner I use for the brew equipment. PBW is the flavor this month.
I let the cleaner sit overnight and rinse. Apply some CO2 to the keg and let some cleaner and rinse go through the dip tube and out.

You can completely rebuild the keg for $7.65 from www.morebeer.com Includes all the o rings and two poppet valves.

Andy, I never once claimed I cleaned them. I rinsed them out, put new o-rings on them, and gave them a quick shot of co2 to check the seal, that's it. Soak them in PBW overnight, and if you still don't like them, ship them back to me and I'll give you your money back...

hey, it's cool danno... i just want to get them cleaned up. After looking at our coorespondence you are correct... there was never any claim of cleaned/reconditioned, etc. My mistake... completely.

It was never my intention to call you out on this.

I've tried a couple of things... PBW, One-Step soaking for about a day and neither have seemed to help. I just want to get them usable for homebrew since I have a few things needing to be kegged coming up quick and wanted to see what some of the members had to say.

If you can get your hands on Sani-Clean, there is a "recipe" for odor removal, but you have to use it in pretty high concentrations (about 4-6 times the amount needed to sanitize).

you can use baking soda to remove the smell

his an excert from a kegging book i have

"Deodorize the keg with a cup of baking soda in 5 gallons of warm water, and leave to soak for several hours or even overnight. Again, rinse well several times with water"

Well, a couple of PBW soaks and Sanitizer soaks seems to have done the trick on two of them. I will do the other two this weekend and see.

thanks so much for all of your help.

Pull the pressure relief valve open. (If yours doesn't have one, use a screwdriver to push down the gas-in connector poppet - not the beer-out). This will release all the inside pressure. No way you can open it if it's pressurized.

Then, lift up on the handle. It should be easy from there.
