Champ, you ought to make this a true poll - you can edit your original post to do this, I think. Look at the bottom of the message area when you do.
Oh, yeah - ale for me, except in Oktober. :)

Champ, are you going to Cap City tomorrow?

Asking this kind of question is like putting a swill drinker in a round room and telling him to sit in the corner. All you get is confusion.

Geesh... that's one of the questions there's no good answer to, like "are you still beating your wife?"

I drink more ales, but I go for great beer no matter which yeast was used.

Interesting - looks like ales edge out lager. I'm an ale man myself, but among my regular drinking crew of 5 or 6 guys, I'm the only one - the others prefer lager.
As for making it a real poll - I would if I could, but I have no idea how...

What does dark have to do with being an ale or lager? Ever have a Munich Dunkel? Or a Spaten Optimator?

MMMMMMMMMMMMMM.... Optimator..... just had a 500ml bottle the other night; they sell for $1.99 'round here. Wow! :)

No I never have had those. I like my stouts and porters. How are those other beers in comparison? My section of indiana is a little closed minded about beer. They are getting better Krogers has just opened a micro brew section.

The real answer here is that color has nothing to do with categorizing a beer into al or lager (or stouts or porters, as some categorization trees actually separate them from ales). Each category has a wide range of colors; from very pale to very dark.
More to the question, a Munich Dunkel, or even a Bavarian Schwarzbier, is the mainland European lager cousin to the Porter. Dark in color, medium to heavy bodied, rich in malt flavor - though cleaner of esters and high-temp fermentation biproduct flavors and aromas due to colder ferment and storage.
The Optimator is a Doppelbock and could probably be compared to an Imperial Stout or Strong Ale.

Gotta be ale- the darker the better! Just had a few pints of Theakston's Old Peculier last night, wouldn't swop 'em for lager! Followed 'em with a few Snecklifters then a few Directors to finish!

Just to be sure, now... you're not thinking of "lager" the way some Londonites refer to Budweiser (American), are you? Seems like there aren't many UK lagers worth trying, which is odd for a country that gets so cold... but I'm sure it's a traditional sort of thing.
See, I love Old Peculier, but if asked to trade it for a Celebrator Doppelbock, I'd do it in a heartbeat. But that's just me. (Besides, I like the little plastic goat on a string around the bottle - they make great tree ornaments!:D )
Welcome to the board, Bloodaxe!

Directors, if it's what I'm thinking of, Is really good on cask. I had it at a place in somewhere near Brixton and Denmark Hill once.
I know I voted Ale earlier, and I'm not changing my vote, but Schwarzbier is really nice.
I think I need to take a beer vacation. Well, not a full fledged one, but I'm going to a brewery this weekend. Can't stop me!

Aye, they were all on cask! Quite lucky where I live if you don't want to put up with keg you never have to drink the stuff!
I'm not against all lagers, I quite like the Belgian ones such as Leffe and Grimburgen and in this country Matthew Brown's did a great one called Slalom D- unfortunately they were absorbed by Scottish and Newcastle Breweries and it ceased to exist., along with the brewery. Currently, local micro brewers Wylam does a cask "Czech" Pilsner which is canny but hard to find at times.
Most of the standard lagers are bloody awful, little better than Bud so it's hardly surprising I avoid the stuff when something superior is available. A few more cask lagers would be nice to see plus some of the Continental lagers on draught in England too, the main problem being when you do find them they are usually double the price, which I see no justification for, unless they think all the current lager drinkers will switch to 'em! Ta for the welcome!

I have read with great sadness that Greene King is closing the Old Ridleys brewery and has also bought out Belhaven in Scotland. But I hear they will keep Belhaven open and brewing.

I hope Belhaven does OK under it's new owners, I like a pint of 80s and best Bitter. At least Green Kings do cask ale such as Abbot, etc. and don't just view it as an unnecessary anachronism.

I like the Bell Haven Beers and have enjoyed Ridleys beers on cask several times. I think Greene King wanted their pubs. I once visted Greene King in 1989 and had a great tour. I like Abbot Ale on cask very much. I think it is the best beer that GK makes. I hate that they are closing the Ridley plant and I've read that though they will keep some of the Ridleys range of beers, They closed the plant before they could do taste comparisons.
