Say someone politely offers you a beer for your consumting enjoyment. Not knowing what that beer might be, do you accept and hope that this offering is something really worth drinking or say no thanks cause there is a good chance that its gonna be a swiller or spud or the likes? I was just wondering...

If at a bar, let them buy the first round. Suck it up and kill the swiller (or find a thristy ficus). Then, you return the favor, spend a bit more, and buy them a real beer for the second round.

You could ask what they are offering. If the answer is not to your liking then tender a response such as"I'm sorry I forgot that I have to take kid to soccer game, drive mom to doctor, taking medication that does not allow alcohol consumption, or on second thought I better not have any right at the moment thank you any ways."
Or perhaps telling the you are a beer snob and if they offer you a poor choice of beer that you will have to plug thier toilet and are they willing to risk that.

If at a bar, I choose to buy someone a drink, I invariably ask, "What are you drinking?" I would hope that someone else would have the good sense to do the same - because I hate being in that position! I've had to take a few sips of beer, wait until someone wasn't looking, and dump it before. Kinda weird like that, I know...

I was at a party yesterday held at a restaurant. they only had the usual suspects but did have draft Yuengling. I almost passed and drank liquor. I also found that they had Red Stripe in bottles. I'm not a fan of either beer really but it was open bar and I sucked it up.

A tie for number one on my list of beer.
Good beer and free beer.
This past July while sitting on my veranda enjoying a Bell's Pale Ale our friends came over from across the road and said her brother was up from down below (how we refer to people here that live south of Saginaw) and they were going to have a camp fire would we like to join them. We excepted and my wife grabbed the lawn chairs and I carefully carried my glass of beer over making sure I did not spill any. My friend is a painter and has a lot of empty 5 gallon buckets and we were using them for end tables to set our drinks on. I finished my glass of Bell's PA and was asked if I like another beer. Since they were not drinking at that point I did not know what they had. I said yea sure not knowing what it was going to be. It turned out to be Natural Light! I did the natural thing and poured my beer into my glass.
I did not get but one sip (by the way did not taste anything but water) and the wind changed directions and I was overcome with smoke and had to move my chair. Instead of taking my drink off the bucket I tried moving it with my drink still on top. It tipped over onto the ground. At least it did not go totally to waste because my dog lapped up what it could from the lawn. I ended up going back across the road and retrieving my own beer.
With all that said and if I ever were again asked if I wanted a beer and it turned out to be swill I think I'll take one sip and accidentally spill the rest.

If you're offered by someone you know, chances are you know what type of beer they have on hand. You make the call.
If you're offered by an acquaintance, at a party, etc. and you're unsure, pass, unless you've seen others with good beer. If you accept and are handed something you don't like, say thanks, accept it like a gift and either suck it up or conveniently put it down and "forget" where you left it. No need to be rude.
Cheers!

I was once at some cousin's house and they asked if I wanted a beer. I said sure, when I found out it was a miller product I politely declined. One of my other cousin's heard me and he said "Yeah, I'm not fond of Miller Lite either. I much prefer the Silver Bullet."

You almost have to give up at that point.
I was helping my neighbor yesterday as he cut down a piece of a tree that Rita had damaged. After we finished, he offered me a beer. I was almost certain it would be swill, but I accepted. I drank the Miller Lite from the can as it was offered, and said nothing. Next time, I'll offer the beer and pour an Okto or something easier for the unintiated palate into the proper glassware.
As with most things, if you're too preachy, people will be turned off and their opinions will just be hardened. But just showing people that there is better beer if you're willing to explore will go a long way.

You should see some of the looks from folks who accept beers from me. Especially draft beers at the beach. I've currently got DFH Raison De Etra and Troegs Pale Ale on down there.

pulling a blank tap handle and then tasting Raison when you're used to drinking BL . . . .

Exactly.....:D
I have a tap handle collection but it is mostly VA, DC, and Maine brewery handles. A couple of others too. But I'm not putting them on the taps. So my current taps are indeed just the plain black ones. I do keep some bottled beer there too.

Being a responsible host, I try to have a beer that everyone can drink. I will make an attempt to serve only mircos, using product like Saranac and our Syr produced Syracuse Pale Ale(Middle Ages) as those beers. I won't serve AB or Miller but sometimes brake down and provide Labatts. When I offer a beer and questioned as to what I have I take no offense. I don't want to be in the position of offering something a person will not/can't drink.

I'll usually have some Old Dominion Lager on hand in bottles that usually passes muster with most folks.

That'll pass with me anyday. That's a damn fine lager. I only had two bottles from a trade. It's on my very short list of pale lagers

Agreed. It is a fine, well made, beer.
Maybe the accidentlly spill the swill is not such a good idea if you are inside someones house.

I don't know, it might teach them to keep better beer in the house.
