Hm. Hadn't even heard of it, 'til now. I'll go check out my local paint store and see if it's available in my area.

I have to say this but if the 96 is as close to what it's supposed to be as the Bock is.................................... As always, no disrespect intended.

I'll be sure to be on the look out for it. Sounds interesting. Many people rail on Shiner, but in a lot of places around here that and Sam Adams are my only real choices, so I've been know to drink a few. When in Rome...

I hope it's not as bad (and highly priced) as the rest of the crap they churn out.

Anybody know anything about Bocktober fest in Shiner TX.?

I'm starting to stress about this beer. All my usual haunts don't or won't stock it. Guess we're gonna have to make a road trip to Austin or Fort Worth.

HEB has it in SA... its not too bad.

Ive noticed lately that Shiner has started renaming their beers.
Their Summer Stock is now called Kolch Ale, and the Winter Ale is now Dunkel Weisen. I havent seen if any of ther other 'speciality beers' are being renamed to the style.

HEB has it here now. Yeah, they've changed their labels, too. They still call Shiner Blonde, well...Shiner Blonde. I haven't seen any re-labeled or re-named Hefeweizen.

FWIW, I really like the 96. Very pleasant beer. A Marzen-style.

Had the hef a couple of weeks ago, haven't seen it since. Found it to be pretty good for a hef, though I generally am not a big fan of hef's.

I live in Denison, if you know where that is.

I was in Austin last week and found a case of the 96. It was okay, something I couldn't drink a whole lot of at one time. The Marzen style isn't my favorite. I still haven't found any here in the DFW area though.

I picked up a case (wooden crate) at Central Market in Fort Worth over the weekend.

I'm not a huge fan of Marzens, but it was decent.

had a few of them while brewing (steam, 9 lbs base, 1 lb krystal).

It was good enough I'll prolly pick up whatever the do for the next few years as they work toward 100 years.

I liked it. Speaking of Bock... I used to buy it when it was $2.45/sixer... It is still my "crap" beer! It is not to style, but it goes down well in the TX heat...

Have You tried the Plano Central Market? They tend to have just about everything that's available in the DFW area.

I like the 96, I first had it at Oktoberfest in Fredericksburg. Of couse it was between Sam Adams Oktoberfests and Spaten Optimators, so it seemed rather tasteless then. But I just picked up a case at Sam's for $18 something... So far I like it.

The thing with Shiner that should be understood is that it's not really a "craft brewery" like the rest of the micros. It's a bubbafied small town brewery east of San Antonio, and it's almost 100 years old. When I moved to Austin in 1989, a sixer of Shiner bock was like $3.25. Regular Shiner was kind of like Lone Star, but they did have this odd darker- but really cheap beer, the "bock." (which we all know isn't a TRUE bock, but it's not supposed to be either.)

Then they got swallowed up by the microbrew revolution, and some marketing guy probably told them "Hey- you're a microbrewery now. You can charge $5.99 for that swill to city folk- they won't know any better!!!" So in no time, Shiner products went from $3 something to $5 or $6 a sixer. Same old stuff. Then they started making watered down versions of other popular craft styles, and suddenly, they entered the revolution in the mid 90's.

All that being said, I really like Shiner. It is what it is- a small town Texas brewery, making beers that folks used to Lone Star Beer would like. That's the audience they're brewing for. If you're expectations aren't too high, you'll like 'em just fine. But if you're expecting Rogue or Dogfish Head, you'll be dissapointed.

Precisely. And well said. I'm not saying Shiner products will win any medals, but they aren't terrible, and I have a real loyalty for local products. Various Shiner beers are usually in my fridge.

I am not much of a fisherman, but would gladly meet you for a beer at some place like Cellarman's in Sherman. By the way...have you eaten at Da Happy Cajun out in Pottsboro? Great food...though they only offer Shiner Bock on tap and Dixie as the only remotely drinkable beers.

Also....came across the Shiner 96 in McKinney this weekend, getting this post back on track so far as the thread is concerned. I have, as of yet, to try it.

A new friend of mine had a Brew party at his house this weekend and one of the things in the tub of beer was a Shiner 96 but I could not taste it due to the fact I had a chilli beer (it had a pepper in it) and it tasted like shit. My mouth was on fire and it seems like I couldnt taste anything the rest of the weekend.

Must've been the Cave Creek Chili Beer. Still haven't worked up the courage to try it. I hear it's pretty foul.
