I experienced my first boil over the other day and I am having a hell of a time getting the last of the burnt DME off the burner bowls.

I have tried soaking the bowls, scrubbing with an abrasive pad, using a brass brush, and using an abrasive cleaner. There is still a black layer that seems to be bonded to the bowls.

Any suggestions on getting this stuff off would be greatly appreciated (especially by my wife!) :)

buy new bowls...no seriously try soaking in TSP. I started brewing on the stove as well and moved out onto the grill by using the side burner. No worry about spill over then. I eventually bought a turkey fryer and some larger kettles and now brew on them in the driveway. Now I do not worry about boil overs at all.

Hehe...boil overs suck...

I had my one and only boil over about 10 minutes after telling my brother that I'd never had a boil over :o

Either buy new burner dealie's or let the burnt DME serve as a constant reminder that an unwatched kettle is an angry kettle.

or even better, follow fast eddy's indirect advice: don't tell people that you don't have trouble with boil-overs! thats a sure way to make you have a boil over!

tom c- you must now beware of this too! ;)

What is TSP?

Tri-Sodium Phosphate. A cleaner that you should be able to get at the same place you got your other brewing supplies.

PBW (Powdered Brewers Wash) also is very effective...

Thanks again. I will look for these products, but the local brewshop I frequent caries very little in the way of cleaning/sanitizing supplies outside of sodium metabisulphite.

I started ordering stuff from the US such as Star San (I really like it, no more bleach!).

I am going to email five star and see if they have any Canadian distributers.

There are several other things that I have never had happen - but there's no way in hell that I'll tell you what they are ;)
